Sound card

yes very good.

only the creative x-fi range were supposed to increase game performance using a special game mode, selectable in the driver control panel (Audio creation mode, Entertainment and Game) are selectable.

but it turned out to be a bit of a gimmick.

just pulled this of the creative website about the fatality series, but they all offer the same features and settings

The essential audio upgrade for serious PC gamers.
Sound Blaster® X-Fi Xtreme Gamer - Fatal1ty Professional Series is the essential audio upgrade for serious PC gamers. Endorsed by the world's leading pro gamer, it's the most powerful sound card ever, accelerating Direct X, OpenAL and EAX 5.0 to give the highest quality cinematic audio at faster frame rates, with 64MB of X-Ram to ensure fast loading of high-quality sounds. Game Mode dedicates the processor 100% to game audio, powering X-Fi CMSS-3D to give ultra-realistic surround sound over stereo headphones for LAN or late-night gaming. In addition, X-Fi 24-bit Crystalizer restores sparkle to low quality audio, upgrading games, MP3, DIVX and TV audio to 24-bit quality.
X-Fi, the world's most powerful audio processor, delivers faster frame rates in games with hardware accelerated Direct X, OpenAL and EAX 5.0.

Sorry to hijack slightly, but is there any real difference in sound quality between Asus and Creative or is it just user preference?

Don't know about if you'll notice the sound difference (Depends on your ears & your set up) but you will notice the driver difference. Creative drivers are terrible & (Not that I can vouch for this myself) the Asus ones are supposed to be pretty good.

For gaming which will increase performance

around 75 pound mark

No sound card today will increase performance with gaming, EAX is mostly dead and CPU's are fast enough to be able to handle sound on their own easily without any help from the soundcard.

Xonar DX would be good for extra sound quality if you find onboard lacking, but it wont help much if its paired up with cheap speakers etc.
