Soooo there I was happy as larry listening to some music from my PC. My temps on my EVGA 680 was too high so I thought I would replace the TIM. Did that and put the card back in. Temps are all sorted but now I have no sound at all...

Things I have tried are:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers.
2. Disabled and re-enabled the audio device.
3. Took the EVGA back out.
4. Reinstalled windows 7.
5. Plugged in different speakers.

It is an Asrock Ext 4 Gen 3 mobo and I have front Audio connectors (for headphones and mic) and these have stopped working also. This really has me stumped. Even if I pull the lead out it comes up "you have unplugged an audio device" and when I plug it back in it tells me I have plugged it in.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have done some more investigating and I do not have speakers as an option in the HD audio manager or anywhere. I appreciate that something may have broken on the mobo and I have ordered a sound card. I would have thought though that even though there is no sound out of the speakers, I should be able to get the front panel to work still?

What is the actual audio device you are using?

They are 2.1 yamaha speakers on realtec HD audio. I am starting to lose it a little now, as when I play music I can see the bar going up and down but no sound is coming out. I plugged some creative speakers in also (to rule out the speakers were broken) and still no sound. No sound from the headphones when I plug them into the front control panel.

I have unplugged the HD Audio connector from the computer to rule that out and plugged it back in. I was getting "you plugged a device into the audi jack" and "you have unplugged a device from the audio jack" continuously popping up.

If it is NVidia card, check for Nvidia 3d sound drivers being installed and clashing with your Realtek drivers. It happened to me and only way out was to de-install nvidia drivers, boot to get sound back and reinstall them usng custom option and deselecting the NVidia 3D sound drivers.

In the process of RMA'ing an ASUS board because of problems with the Realtek HD audio.
Sounds slightly similar in that speakers were greyed out as a choice in the Audio manager, tried everything I could think of but had no joy so sent it back :(

I checked and it wasn't that. I went to a local shop and bought a cheap sound card and all sound working now. I assume it is the onboard sound failed/broken.

Thanks for the input and sound back and I am happy now :) Annoying is the fact I don't have a lot of room in my case and I had to squeeze the sound card inbetween my 680's :(

When you reinstalled windows, did you try the sound before you installed any new drivers etc? will cut out if it is a driver issue or not.

If you did and it was still bust, i would assume the audio on your mboard itself has gone. your front panel audio wont work as they run off your mboard also (unless you have some special front panel on an awesome case, but if you plug it into the JAUD connector it will still use your mboard.

I am still in warranty and I may well do this. Asrock board is fantastic but this I am not happy with. I just can't be without a gaming computer for a few weeks while it is sent all over the world. I have been looking to upgrade my wifes computer, so I may RMA this buy another mobo and CPU for mine and she can have the I5 with the RMA'd Asrock Ext4 Gen3.

Win win except for the wallet.

I will check on the front but I believe it is broken still. Frustrating as I use a head set with mic for TS whilst gaming.

Edit:

Tried the front panel and no sound :( Looks like I could be getting a newer mobo than expected.

Yeah I'm less than happy about having no computer...Pretty new board though so wasn't happy about having to buy a sound card because it had packed up so soon. Did think about just grabbing a cheap USB one but then it sucks if I want to sell the board on in future.

I was pretty limited to what I could buy (no stock) and this was £20 so thought that will do for now. I looked at the USB ones and they looked a little dearer.

this happened to my dads comp

i told him to get the below until he replaced / got a decentsound card.

1 year on hes still using it....
