Just reinstalled XP on a Compaq Presario SR1705 and downloaded all the drivers from the compaq website.

Everything worked fine apart from the Audio - The driver installed although its saying there is no mixing device and won't work. All audio codecs are installed in device manager.

The other thing is that there is an unknowen PCI device - Although there is nothing else in there apart from the WIFI card.

Any idea what would cause this?

Board Model no is: RC410-M - Tried to google the drivers for this although can't find anything for that model.

The unknown device, one would hazard a guess that this is your sound card. It could be faulty. Try disabling the soundcard in BIOS and reboot to see if the "unknown" device goes. Try re-enabling it again and it might just be detected correctly, otherwise buy a cheap new one.

Try installing the sound driver in safe mode. Exact thing was happening to me but on a realtek onboard audio. Installed it while the computer was in safe mode and it seemed to do the trick.
