I've noticed when watching films and TV shows, whether it's through nowtv, virgin or bluray, the explosions are really loud yet speaking is quiet, this means I have to turn the volume up but at the same time, this causes everything else to be too loud.

What are my options? Sound bar? Or a seperate set of speakers?

If you have the option to change to Stereo output on whatever service/device you're using, do that. A soundbar or proper speakers will be far, far better than built-in TV speakers though.

I have it set to Stereo on nowtv and my virgin box.

I don't have much room for speakers so I think a sound bar will be better, any recommendations? I may be changing my TV soon so as long as it's able to work with most TV sets.

No real budget, I've been looking at the yamaha yas105 and the Samsung k450, just need to read some reviews.

I have the YAS-105 wall mounted in the bedroom and it's very good. One downside is I've never managed to get either the TV or Sky remote to work changing the volume.

I understand the Samsung soundbar is a just one simple connection from TV to bar and seamlessly integrates which could be a big plus.

Sounds like your audio settings are using Dynamic range. plenty of sources online discussing this, sometimes it can be encoded into the audio stream of the movie itself, a sound bar wont make a huge difference, but a dedicate 5.1 or above amp will, as you have more control over the sound mode and output.

Have a google of Stereo Downsampling and dynamic sound...

I recently bought a Samsung and also found it quite annoying. I bought the K450 soundbar (lower end of the range) and it's helped substantially. It has settings for treble, bass and the "sounds" and has a separate sub which you can control the volume of as well.

At 1st I also found it annoying having to use 2 remotes as I had it connected optically, but I later learned if you connect it through the ARC hdmi socket the TV remote can control the volume.

I now find I have to change the volume between shows as opposed to during them.

There should be an option either called night mode or dynamic range compression or something similar. Every TV will have such a setting.

There should be different preset audio settings you can try like music preset mode ect :) if those dont make much difference then invest in a sound bar like others have said:)

Note that, if you use a soundbar, it'll actually accentuate the problem as it'll have more dynamic range than the TV will. That said a soundbar is pretty much guaranteed to have a "night" mode you can use.
