Sound Levels

Hi,

I am trying to lower the noise levels of my pc and was wondering what would be the most effective way of doing this. Does the sound insulation foam actually work?? I'm also trying to find the source of the annoying fan hum. I have a Gigabyte rocket cooler and a X1800XT with stock fan. My idea was to swap the CPU and GPU fans for some nice Zalman ones. Not sure if this will make a difference though.

I hope this is in the correct forum if not i will happily move it. Oh one last thing, do you think the airflow could be creating the noise, my cable management isnt the best.

Many Thanks

Mike

I currently have the following system.

Akasa Eclipse 62 with 2x Akasa Amber 120mm fans
ASUS A8N-E with a 3700+ 64
X1800-XT
Fatality XFI Soundcard
2gb of Ballistix
2x Maxtor drives.

Don't bother with the foam, it only works for the last small part of the noise elimination.

The HSF on the CPU and GFX would be an excellent start. The graphics card especially has a habbit of making a lot of noise.

Any advice on coolers?? I was thinking Zalman, this the right direction??? I was looking at around £60 to silence the PC.

Oh forgot to mention i have a tagan easycon psu but i doudt that is making a lot of noise.

cheers

mike

I use a Zalman V900 on my GFX, is a good cooler for my 7800gt. Zalman is one of the better directions to go down. :)

You could also change the CPU cooler to one with a quiet fan on, or by a good brand like Zalman as they are quite quiet most of the time. :)

Zalman VF900 is kinda loud when using on a radoen X1800XT, you can change the speed of the fan but then your card will get hotter...If you have room the Thermaltake Tide Water seems like the quietest around...

I wouldn't trust a cheap watercooling product like that on my nice new graphics card really. It looks like a good idea and i can't say i've tried it, but from the fact i've never seen anyone on here with one it can't be that great. I have a VF700 and it's been fantastic, on 12v it's not very bad for an average system, but at 5v's it's near silent. It's also less than half the price of the TT and doesn't have the risk of using water and cheap plastic.

Out of interest what temps were you getting with your X1800XT?

Yeah the reviews have been fairly good...but I don't trust reviews.

I know Saphire use that (or a slightly modified version) on their Toxic/blizzard cards and it needs to be run at high speed when playing games to keep the card cool which is much louder than any zalman cooler.

Loads of people use the Zalmans, why I use one.

On my 7800gt I run it at the lowest possible speed, get 54deg on a whole day gaming session which I find acceptable. :)

As long as the VF900 keeps the temperature below the top the stock goes to, but with less noise it is doing its job.

my x1800xt with stock is at about 50 ish, but when i play bf2 maxed out it sounds like i'm next to an airport as the fan revs up lol.

i've got enough space for the watercooling unit but might go with zalman still. Are there any fanless options available??

Not really.

Not enough people use or recommend the Tt solution for me to risk it, I had a look when I was picking my cooler for the 7800gt.

The VF900 is one of the standard choices everyone goes for, it is very quiet in operation aswell. :)
