I want to connect my PC to my TV but the only option I have is HDMI, is there a way to get sound over HDMI with my 7900GTX?

Thanks.

I know that with the 295 you needed to use a bridge cable that was black and blue. So there was definitely no audio processor on the card itself.

That only happened from Fermi on, so unless you can bridge the sound from the motherboard to the GPU and carry it through somehow I strongly doubt it.

i know that a lot of the early cards that had hdmi ablile, could send sound throught the hdmi but a cable would be need connecting the graphic card to the sound card. later on nvidia/ati saw that this practise wasn't very good as some people didn't have the internal connection port on their sound card so they start designing graphic cards that had onboard sound processor.

So is it possible by using my onboard realtek and my 7900gtx with some kind of combiner? Or am I SOL?

My 260 came with a cable like this, to connect it to the SPDIF mobo connector. When they started including this though I don't know:

@beejjacobs - my old gtx285 has the same port on it too, but i not to sure if the 7900gtx has one.

@PiKe- not to sure if the 7900gtx has an sound port on it. so you would first need to check the manual for your 7900gtx and card itself to see if it has a audio connection on the pcb. but the better solution is simple upgrade to a graphic card that has onboard audio. you can pick up at gt520 for £32

How does the GT520's performance compare to my 7900GTX?

well the gt 520 has a full 1gb of ram where the 7900gtx only has 512mb, the 7900gtx is dx10, where the gt520 is dx11. thing you got to remember is the 520 is three generation newer than the 7900gtx so their be lot of perormance improvements to it over nvidia 7xxx series card. gt520 should play most game on 1080p at medium level, but if you want to play games like bf3,mw3 at 1080p with high to utlra setting you looking at 560ti and above(ati 6870 and above) for future proofing you want a card with 2gb of ram. all depends on what you want to do and how much you want to pay, but the gt 520 is good short term solution that will allow you to watch your movies and play games while you either save up or research which graphic card you want to go for. looking at the spec alone the gt 520 is a much faster card than the 7900gtx

I only have an AMD X2 (Socket 949 :o) at 2.4ghz and 4gb DDR Ram, so getting a fancy graphics card when the CPU is just going to bottleneck isn't much point. Would the GT520 still twin quite nicely with my spec?

Have a look through this:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_520/1.html

The 520 is likely to be much more efficient but is very low end. Sure it's a few generations newer, but its the low end of a new one, whereas the 7900GTX was the highest in that series. I'm just not sure it'll be an improvement at all, but can't find any comparisons.

Every single game they test the 520 gets less than 30FPS (much less in most cases)) at 1080p. It is not a gaming GPU.

So what else can you suggest without spending a fortune? I only ever intended to buy a dvi-d to hdmi cable but as I can't get sound I have to go down this route... What about a Radeon HD 5670 ?

What system are you connecting to? can you not use the onboard jack or something?

Other than that, I'd suggest getting something cheap second hand

And your card doesn't have the connection above? (sorry i dont know when they started including it)

Is this for gaming or just movies etc...?
