sound problem:

Hi all,

having an issue with my PC lately, i've had this exact build for well over a year now (all brought from OCUK) and this issue has only started happening in the past month or so - no clue why!

basically, when i leave my PC on for a few hours (sometimes less) the sound will just cut out completely and certain applications will fail to load (when i say fail, i mean i'll double click for example battlefield 3 and nothing happens). also Youtube videos won't play.

Anyway a reboot solves this but that's not really a permanent solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

specs -

i7 2700k
asus P8Z77-V LX2
gtx 780
16gb 1600mhz ram

I've ran a memtest on RAM and a HD Tune Pro test on my SSD to rule out any failures there. I've also done a fresh install of windows 8.1, installed the most recent realtek audio drivers from asus website and tried a 7.1 soundcard. also tried rolling back NVidia's drivers - still happens.

In these two hours that the PC is on, you don't use it? Or you are using it then this behaviour happens?

it's happened whilst i'm using it but it's mainly whilst the PC is idle. sometimes it can be on for 8-10 hours and it'll happen. like, i'll leave it on for 4-5 hours with the monitor off, come back to it and the audio won't be working and will require a reboot - that's mainly when it occurs.

Erm why was my topic moved? I've already posted it in this section and was told to post it elsewhere for a better chance of a solution......

Being moved lol

Check your power management, check no drives go to sleep when they are left still for a while

Drives as in hard drives, not drivers :D

Yes, advanced, hard disk, turn hard disk off after then OFF

It's been moved because of the thread title. The mod saw it as an issue with sound, so moved the thread to what appeared to be the correct location. A different title not specifically focusing on lack of sound being the only effect, probably would have resulted in the thread being left where it was.

Anyway, that doesn't matter now: So other than lack of sound, are you finding that only specific software (BF3) fails to load when you try run it, or is it affecting all software?

ah well I was told it wasn't necessarily a sound only problem, but that is the main thing effected.

I've noticed that I'm now able to launch BF3 when this happens, I'm also able to play youtube videos with Chrome only (no sound) but if I use internet explorer the video stutters and switches from black fuzzy error screen to whatever video is playing (with huge stutter)

ahh i'm getting SO frustrated with it. i know it's probably something silly, that i haven't overlooked, it's just finding what exactly. infact at this point i don't even care if it's something more serious (a hardware fault) that will cost me to replace - i just want to know what.

think i've FINALLY just figured out what the problem was. it happened again just now, so i opened task manager and started stopping certain programmes, finally came round to ending Origin and boom everything works as it should again. almost 100% certain that's the culprit. gonna go rage it up on Origin forums.

Thanks all for the help.

That's very interesting. Well I hope that it does turn out that Origin was the cause; by that I mean you've found the culprit. It's very frustrating to have a problem but not know where to start. Sometimes it comes down to just trial and error until you stumble upon the solution. :P

well the fact that I managed to get the audio working and everything running how it should by just ending processes tells me it isn't a hardware fault (my worst fear), so I'm happy! :D

My apologies, I've not been able to respond for the last couple of days due to an involuntary holiday (oops) :D

Looks like you've tracked it down anyway, it's possible just reinstalling the Origin launcher will solve the problem.

hey no worries Rids, hope you enjoyed your reluctant holiday :D

I think it's just a general problem with Origin as I reformatted and reinstalled windows 8.1 only 2-3 weeks ago (also a fresh install of Origin)

I actually retract my earlier statement; the problem is with PunkBuster and Realtek, seems I'm not the only one who is affected by it either.
