I'm looking to get a decent surround sound system and i'm torn between getting a more traditional av receiver and surround speakers and a sound projector such as the Yamaha YSP-800/900.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of a sound projector as i understand you need plenty of walls to bounce the sound off although you can target it at 1 point as well. In my current place the projector would be ideal as it takes up less space and wouldn't have cables trailing all over the place and would be surrounded by 4 walls. BUT are they as good as the more traditional separate speaker set up?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it only for watching movies ?

If so, then it will be fine as your eyes will make up for the deficiencies.

I found it sounded like old Tandberg designed system from 30 years ago. It sounded "surround" but if you were critical then placement of sounds wasn't accurate and there were "sweet spots" in the room.

Yeh, it's just for watching dvd's through really. I can't afford the full hi-fi set up i want - darn Cambridge Audio make so much nice stuff but just out of budget!
