Hey guys,

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is it with all this '7.1 HDMI sound support through your graphics card' stuff? Basically, how does it work

I know that my current gpu supports it and that my new gpu supports it, but what does it actually mean/do, and how should I be using it?

Cheers,

SW.

Its for HDMI Output to an AV Amplifier or TV/Monitor that has speakers. Basically HDMI is capable of carrying audio & video; and the new ATI Cards will do 7.1 output over HDMI. The previous generation only did 2 channel output, in the same format. It is mostly for HTPCs, or folks like myself who run their PC Audio through an AV Amplifier.

Thanks for the explanation ;)

Does that mean I can use an dvi/hdmi cable from my gpu to my tv and get audio out from my pc through my tv? I think that makes sense - if I could, that would be quite handy ;)

yes, like a ps3 carries audio and video to the tv via hdmi

Will sound be carried if its DVI - HDMI or only HDMI - HDMI?

Also, what connections are needed on the graphics card to allow sound?

Thanks,

Johnny.

you use te dvi port and the dongle which should be supplied

and then just a hdmi to hdmi lead to your tv

im not sure if you can use an all in one dvi-hdmi lead, depends on the pin arrangements tbh

should be a pin header on the graphics card which you connect to your sound card or your motherboards audio headers

Unless you have an ATI Card, in which case; all you need are the drivers from the realtek site (For 38xx, not sure on the 48xx)

I still haven't got round to using hdmi myself unfortunately, but my friend has just shown me his setup and its got me thinking about it again ;)

He showed me a blue-ray movie through his pc on his 42" plasma and it looked and sounded great! I've abandoned my old dvi-hdmi cable idea as that seemed to be making it more complicated that it needed to be…

So, using the dvi-hdmi adaptor (as pictured by <maddness>) that came with my 4800, all I need is a regular hd cable - one off the Bay or whatever? I'm hoping to be able to watch dvd's/play games on my pc through my tv, with sound.

I'm currently connected to my tv with an vga-vga cable - will I notice much difference with the new config? Apart from having sound obviously :p Can you still configure the resolution etc as with vga?

ok so just out of interest, if no conection to the sound card is needed where does the video card get the sound from.

I assume its either.

the sound card: which means all the expense for a decent sound card just to have sound draged through the pci/pcie connector across the motherboard and then through the videos card to get to the output.....oh lovley

onboard sound: as above but bypasing the soundcard altogether.

video card: surely they havent incorperated thier own sound hardware onboard to generate the sound.

The video card has a built in realtek sound chip for the sound. On my 4870 I use the dongle connected to the card, hdmi cable from the dongle to my LCD TV and sound and picture is sent to the TV via the cable. Works very well. Only thing thats a little bit of a pain is having to select the default sound output in playback devices when changing between sound through TV or sound through PC speakers.

If anyone knows of a way around this please let me know, cheers.
