Hello, i have put up with my LG sound bar and subwoofer for far too long now and want to get something better.

What is there out there that is nice and stylish that will give out some nice bass and very clear sound. This will be for my TV/Xbox and music and going in my living room which is a big room but there isn't much room around where the TV cabinet is for something too big without looking silly.

Looking for something like this (looks wise):

Not too fussed about 5.1 surround sound as i cannot be doing with wires, wires really bug me if they cannot be hidden easily. Also looked at those standing sound systems but they are just too big and would mean moving my TV stand from the centre of the wall (again would bug me).

Anyone got anything similar to the above picture that fills the room with sound? That system there is only 120w which doesn't too much given the at the same price there is 2400w systems (look horrendous though). Budgeting at around £500.

Thanks

You don't need 120w, a 30w separate is plenty loud enough for the home.

30w?

Guess i do not understand how watts/sounds work then :p. The sound bar i have now is 100w with a subwoofer. I only kept it as it does sound better than the tv's speakers and ok on normal tv viewing.

Its when i put a film/music or a game on that i notice how rubbish it actually is.

You basically want a modern AV receiver + how ever many speakers you want. 99% of receivers will be 5.1 or more but you just use however many speakers you want but the ability to add more is there should you need it. There are quite a few receivers around £250-300 from Yamaha, Sony, Denon and most brands so have a look around and see what features you want (amount of HDMI inputs for your devices, 4K, built in spotify, wifi etc).

Then its just a case of picking a pair of speakers, bookshelf rather than standing would give you more options in your budget and if you decide you want more bass after getting the 2 fronts then you could get a sub, if you want more clarity in movie voices you could get a centre (**if you think you may add speakers after the first 2 then make sure what you buy also has a centre available should you want it as you want at least your front 3 speakers to match**). And then if you decide in the future you want to go full 5.1 or more the option is there to add (don't be put off by 'wires' as you can get thin decent speaker cable than can be pushed down the side of the carpet or tacked into the skirting board in minutes).

Connection wise it is Xbox, Blu-Ray and everything else into the receiver via HDMI and then one HDMI cable from the receiver in to the TV.

Have a look at the The Denon RCD-N9, I've just got one for my TV with a pair of Q acoustic 3020s. Has a sub output if you want to use it and you can get amp and speakers well in your budget. Sounds brilliant and has 2 optical ins and Spotify connect as a bonus :)

It's 60watts and fills the room nicely!

Thanks guys.

Like the above idea. Richer sounds have a deal on a Denon unit with the 3020s for £350 (not the same unit as you listed though). Was reading the reviews last night on the speakers, 5/5 everywhere.

Think you have made my decision :)

Will pop into Richer Sounds next time i am in sheff.

The one they have on offer is the DM40DAB which is pretty low output and didn't seem up to the job to me. Exceptional AV had an offer on my setup for £369 and Richer sounds price matched :)

Yeah? Im not shy when it comes to bartering. Did the same on a TV i bought from them without price matching.

Gunna go in the morning and have a look.

The one you have also has bluetooth doesnt it? Guess that would be quite handy.

The sound bar will no doubt be stating its combined power, with the little speakers in the bar being able to take about 5w. Anything rated to 2000w which looks like Blackpool illuminations will be stating its peak power and should be avoided. You want to focus on RMS figures.

For example, 30w RMS will be plenty for a living room. 50w RMS upwards is where it starts to get loud.
