Source games crashing

Hi guys,

A friend of mine has just bought a brand new pc and bought a few source based games before it arrived. The games he bought were the orange box and left 4 dead 2.

When he starts the games it gets as far as the "powered by source" logo and thats it. The program crashes back to desktop.

He is running an nvidia geforce 60. Has uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled the latest ones but still gives the same issues.

Has anyone else had this problem. It only effects source based games as anything else runs fine.

Thanks
Steveo

Sorry guys about the mistype. Its a geforce 240 1gb and is running windows 7 pro 64bit. CPU is an I7 @ 2.8ghz, 8 gig of ddr3 ram.

Dawn of war 2 and mass effect 2 are two of the other games that work fine.

Update - Portal and HL2 work fine its just left 4 dead 2 that is now crashing.

FIX 1
This is for vista users (I'm unsure if it'll work for others). If at any point it comes up with the annoying 'are you sure?' messages, just click through them as per normal.

1)Navigate to your windows folder (usually c:/windows/)
2)Inside there, goto the CSC folder
3)Try to open the folder and it should fail (if it doesn't, you have a different problem). It'll come up with 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder' at which time you keep pressing continue until it says you've been denied.
4)Right-click the folder, go to properties.
5)Go to the security tab at which point it'll say 'To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object's security properties' at which point you click continue.
6)Click on admin in the owner tab which will swap the owner to the administrator then click OK.
7)You then click on OK once again which will bring up the security tab.
8)Tick 'full control', press OK twice to get out of the properties tabs.
9)Run the game.

You think it could be worth trying an alternative graphics card incase its that causing it ? Only problem is cos the pc is shop bought it may mess up his warrenty.

Its more likely to be a permission/operating system/game setting thing than a graphics card problem (albeit driver versions) especially seeing as other games work fine.

Opening the case normally involves breaking a case seal which as you say may invalidate the warranty but perhaps a quick call to the shop may confirm this as the very nature of PC's means you might want to upgrade/insert new items and I've had arguments with shops (I only brought 1 pc from a 'shop' and I think you can all guess which one i'm talking about!) - now I buy my bits from OcUK. :D

Has he tried verifying his game files?

Right click on left 4 dead 2 > properties > local files > verify integrity of game cache

I had a problem with l4d crashing every time I joined a server not long back, this fixed it for me, if he copied the files over from a previous install it's possible that is the issue

Ok its now finally working. Ran the verify cache 5 times and on the last attempt it found a bad file and then replaced it.

Started the game and now works fine and managed to play through dead centre with him all the way through without any further issues.

Thanks all for the advice!
