Hi,

I have been to a few universities recently and am wondering what opinion everyone has on Soton University (not Poly).

I know it has a good medical school and law(?). I just want to know what experiences people who were students there have to offer. What was the quality of education like, what it the campus/life like in Southampton?

Thanks for sharing any experiences!

Well, I'm just looking for different perspectives atm actually Burnsy. I know you have some affiliation to there, mind if I drop you an email through trust?

I went for a Mech Eng open day there. Didn't like it at all, they were very up their own arses.

I took my brother to a Physics open day this weekend, seemed fine. Nice campus, and pretty close to town apparently. The only comment I'd make from the open day (and mates that are at Soton) is that the accommodation can be a bummer, depends where you get.

Interesting, I've seen some of the accommodation blocks in my time whilst being a student (had friends learning there) and I didn't think it was too bad. That was probably comparing some of my University halls to them though :)

Does anyone work at the University to shed some light on that side of things?

I'm a first year student here, studying CompSci - I'm loving it so far, the course has been reasonably interesting, with the odd duff lecturer though I must admit. With regards to accommodation, the biggest two are Glen Eyre and Wessex Lane, but I'm living in one of the small halls, Gateley, and I absolutely love it - yes, it's a 20 minute bus journey from campus, but we're right in the city centre next to all the clubs and bars, and our kitchens are ridiculously huge (easily twice the size of anyone else's that I've seen)

My sister was there for 3 years, her halls were in Swathing (sp?) and were an utter dive. However when she had a house in the 2nd and 3rd years it was a lovely place, rented out by Posh Pads, didn't seem like your typical useless student renting too.

Oh and she studied English & Philosophy.

I went to Soton Uni between 1998-2001 and have done all my post grad there too. I played rugby for the university medics aka "the moose". My halls where at the hospital so a different kettle of fish so to speak.

Just a shameless bump to let Burnsy know that I've replied to his reply :D

Also, wondering if anyone else has any input for me? Anything will do in gathering as much information about the place as possible ;)

if your interested in a martial art whilst in Southampton, join the the town club of jujitsu not the uni one lol. we train all year, only a week off for Christmas. (plus we are a different style, Ive trained in both, personally prefer the town club)
