SP2500 dead

Hello,
My SP2500 after nearly 3 yrs stopped working to a point were there were only just auidable at max volume. I opened up the sub woofer to find a part of the PSU PCB blackened and a burnt smell was evident.

My unit is out of warranty and I have contacted Corsair for help but am doubtful I will get much.

Basically I am after if anyone knows where I can get a replacement PSU PCB as it looks very simple to change the out. I have very little knowledge of electronics so would prefer this rather than tinker with a solder iron!

Got a picture of the burn component? You could likely just replace whatever cap/component has gone with minimal soldering skills.

In the second photo all I can see it the blackend PCB to the left of the lower yellow taped thingy :)

Any help is greatly appreciated.
 
Can you remove the board, flip it over and take a picture of that area? From the picture I can't actually see what's gone pop.

While you are at it try to take some pictures of the caps, if any of them look like this you'll need to replace them:

:EDIT: Be careful not to touch the large capacitor as it may have some charge left in it.

Backside looks ok.

Can you give the board a sniff? (Lol) And mark the area you think the burning smell is coming from? Can't really see anything out of the ordinary from the pictures.

If we can find the component in question it'll likely be a case of replacing it and you should be good to go. Otherwise sourcing another sub/PCB could prove problematic.

However I know Corsair support is pretty good with these things so they may pull through for you.
 
There will be some gunk on the board to prevent coil whine, can't really make out the images well enough to narrow down what if any component has gone.

From the photo of the back of the PCB the area just right of center is blackened, although there does not seem to be any particular bit rather a few bits.

In the photo showing the front of the PCB you can see the brown gunk you are referring to. At the top left of the large yellow thing you can see the gunk is charred black, this smells of burning!
 
There's probably an output transistor attached to the heatsink. Odds are that's what's blown. There's also a rather large crack in the ceramic component resistor just to the right and above it.

The warranty was finished by over a year, so opening makes not difference. Only thing it does is let me see if it is a fix I can do myself, or my local electrical repair store can look at, instead of shipping it to Corsair.

It doesn't matter when the warranty finished to get a product repaired (They just have no obligation to do so, and hence why they charge).

But you were far more likely to get Corsair to charge you for a repair (And thus a new warranty) before you opened it.

Like Xbox 360's, you'd pay MS to fix it after warranty expired.

Even ignoring warranty, 3 years isn't an acceptable period of time for speakers, you'd almost certainly have been able to force a repair at a cost with Corsair with little fuss.
 
Ok, I just thought after the warranty was up that was it end of story and you had to pay regardless for if you opened it or not.

One thing is for sure, if I cant get these fixed I will not be a Corsair customer again. Dropping near £200 on speakers was a a big deal 3 years ago, and was done thinking they would last much longer than 3 yrs.
 
You could always point Corsair to this thread to show that you only opened it to diagnose what was wrong if they question it being opened.
 
Have read about these before, as far as I am aware they fail fairly commonly and corsair won't do squat about it after he warranty is out.

So down to my local repair man when I get back from work in a few weeks. Will let you know the outcome. If its bad it will go on eBay for spares.

Shocking attitude by Corsair.
 
Well I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of trying to fix them, so put them up on ebay tonight, someone else will prob fix them really easy :(

Can anyone recommend an equally high quality set of 2.1 speaker. Preferably smaller size and more likely to last much longer. No Corsair please!
