Spa and Paul Ricard to share an F1 race slot from 2013

id say get rid of monaco.......its a boring track in a rich asss city.

come on, i can dream can't i.

Yu can dream, I would hate to lose Monaco. It might not have much overtaking. But it's a real test for driver concentration and no or very few run offs. One of the last such tracks.
I'm all for a mix of circuits and the season should include such a harsh circuit.

I love the whole Monaco weekend. I just don't expect much of a race for 2 hours of it. If there is a decent one, it is a bonus :)

of all the tracks to get rid of they choose spa

spa is one of, if not the best track in the entire season. that monstrosity that has been pictured above doesnt look fit to hold a race between a couple of minicabbers on a sunday evening let alone the most prestigious motorsport in the world

This has nothing to do with F1 deciding to axe the Belgian Grand Prix so they can fit more Asian tracks onto the calander. Whilst I was a Spa this weekend there was talk that they couldnt really afford the race and they were looking to impliment a deal like the Nurburgring/Hockenhem bi-annual schedule - whom ever I spoke to said they just couldnt find a track willing to sign the deal, looks like Paul Richards is the offer

Paul Ricard is a test track full of flat featureless corners ringed by blue lines all over the place and NO grandstands AT ALL. it's a 100% test track at the moment but it does have built in sprinklers so bernie can get his wish of a wet race on cue. have a look

Anyone who thinks this will provide a good race in an F1 car is kidding themselves.

wow, firstly F1 on Sky and now this?

Are they looking for ways to kill Formula 1 or something?

Paul Ricard seems an odd choice considering how much development work would be needed to build the ancillaries required to host a GP. Things like a paddock complex, grandstands (obv.), thousands of car parking spaces, VIP hospitality etc.

Is Bernie trying to use this as an excuse to get someone else to stump up some cash for Spa?

This.

Paul Ricard cannot host F1 as it is. it has zero spectator facilities and almost no pit and padock setup.

Its Bernie making wild statements to get people talking, as per usual.

And that's why people hate Bernie.

He was spoilt by the Far Eastern aristocracy throwing millions at him to let them host an F1 race in countries with little to no interest in the sport.

Meanwhile in Europe and South America, where the majority of the fan base is, governments can't or won't (and shouldn't IMO) bow to his demands for multi-million dollar payments to stage the races.

How he justifies what he demands from them I cannot understand at all.

You seem to be under some sort of assumption that Formula 1 in some way cares about fans at all?

If the money was there, I doubt they'd care that no one was at the track :p

That way my thought, but then I remembered that Bernie owns Paul Ricard. The fact there will be no income from ticket sales is offset by the fact the hosting fee will be free.

GT cars have raced here a few times recently and its been quite good, but I think going to a TV only track for a race is a worrying route for F1 to go down...

Wasnt there something about (Belgian) Eco campaigners trying to get rid of Spa also a few years ago? Wonder if this has something to do with it also

Some Spa is better than no spa as already pointed out - but I have no doubt at all its all about fitting in Bernie's own track as well into the calendar
