Im looking for something to keep me amused for a while, preferably some kind of space based RPG. Like Elite but possibly more up to date :p Something where I can build up my ship, fight other ships and steal their cargo then go and sell it etc. whilst possibly doing other missions. It doesn't have to be new and does have to run on my 6800nu. Any suggestions?

if you get x3 make sure you patch it, as it comes with starforce, which is not needed in one of the offical patches. Not sure if the game still comes with starforce now that the devs decided to remove the need for it (as its an evil program that should never be used imo), but its better to be safe and patch the client and remove any trace of starforce should you decide to get X3.

X3 and freelancer both look like they could be good options, thanks guys, lets see if I can stave off a hardware upgrade for a while longer.

Freelancer is very good. Eve is good but I can't get to grips with it - I prefer a more arcade type game.

I know the new version of Elite was supposed to have been released around now - not sure if that will ever make it but if they do that could pass away a few hours.

Have you tried Oolite? It pretty much is Elite, but with loads of add-ons, so you can change your ship, do missions, etc. And it's free too!

Your only options for what you are looking for with the latest graphics, deep gameplay, etc are Eve or X3: Reunion. The former online, latter offline. Freelancer could be an option also, but is a lot more linear than the other two. You can't have your own fleet like in X3 or build up systems with factories etc. It does have tons of mods for it however. Lancersreactor is a great site for FL mods from memory (haven't played FL for quite a while). X3 also has tons of mods/scripts. The official egosoft site forums have links to most mods out there.

x2 or x3.

Eve is rubbish as it's a click game ie not fps. Which absolutely kills the game. Or at least for me it does. So it depends what you want.

Freelancer's main story is very good but it is pretty short-lived. The side missions are all crap. There are only about 3 different ones - Kill Someone, Capture Someone or Capture Cargo. Multiply that by a million and hey presto hours and hours of boredom!

Unfortunately you need to do a fair amount of these bloody missions to make money to upgrade your ship, as the main mission can be a pig sometimes. [You could also run cargo but that's even more tedious!!].

It is a big shame really as the creators went to a lot of trouble in creating an interesting and varied backstory for all the races/factions and the game could have been much more.

any space rpgs that do the following

space sim type like x3 trading etc in your ship, upgrading ship, new ships etc. Flying over the surface of planets, over cities, over moons etc

go down to planet and do planet missions in a party similar to either KOTR or Baldurs gate style. (BUT not like an FPS because i dont think party based combat works well with FPS-style)

basically like 2 games in one. That would appeal very much to me.

took me 2 seconds to come up with that idea how long will it take the gaming industry to actually make a game that can do it?

any games that do that? Kotor does part of it but not the spacey-sim stuff. Mass effect?

p.s. i said above because i said smt similar the last time.... everything will happen again and keep happening....deja vu all over again on these forums
