Space Based RPG

The problem with the "2-games-in-1" idea is that it runs a massive risk of being a great 3rd person game and rubbish space sim, or vice versa.

I'd love a massive game where you could run around on foot/vehicles on a planet/station and then jump in my gnarly space ship and go loot someone's cargo or join some epic space battle.

The only games I have played where space battles are truly epic are Freespace 1 and 2. If someone could combine epic space battles from FS2, X3's massively open playing area and party/solo action from say Oblivion then we have one of the greatest games ever likely to exist. Anyone got 10 Billion quid to develop it? :p

Darkstar One is properly boring.

It's the same bloody mission over and over and over and over and over and [thud] snore

so why doesnt 2 dev teams get together? 1 a specialist in x3 or freespace type space sim stuff

and the other an rpg specialist e.g. bioware

The size of EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft etc and their in-house and contracted dev teams and none of them think "oh this would be a good idea" OR none of them think lets do this? Its not about the graphics Frontier did planet landing way back in the day.

But yeah i heard SWG had space combat as well as the usual land mmorpg stuff. Did they work well together? Was it possible for your party to have a ship and say 1 or 2 be pilots and others be gunners, etc?

I too found Eve a bit of a click-fest, and mission running got tedious very quickly with only 3 or 4 possibilities.

I think we all want a single player game, with lots of depth, varied side missions, and a story that gradually unfolds through a series of scripted missions that pop up every now and then. Flying your ship with mouse or joystick, newtonian flight characteristics, landing on planets, moons or asteroids.

So, essentially, what all of us want is Elite 2: Frontier, but with modern day graphics, and possibly a little more depth in ships/weapons/equipment.

Sadly, until the now apparently defunct Elite 4 comes along, that's not going to happen... :(

Anyone here tried the game Tachyon? its quite an old space game now, but even years after release it was still a fun game imo, the singleplayer was done quite well in that near the start of the game the missions you choose determin which faction you become a part of.

although each has unique missions, sometimes you will get the exact same mission for both factions but played out differently, Like one faction may give you a mission to attack a transport ship suspected of transporting weapons or something, and you just carry out the mission. but if you play the game a 2nd time as the other faction, you may get a mission where you have to escort that transport ship, and find out its actully a ship transporting tourists or something, and that you was lied to when you played the other faction so that you would kill inocent people without realizing it.

Multiplayer was fun too, there was a couple game modes but the one i prefer was where both teams have a base in seperate systems, and there is a midle system filled with crystals which your ship can pick up (how much you can pick up depends on your ships cargo hold), take back to your base, which upgrades your bases level, unlocking more weapons, and eventully at the top level, giving a special missile needed to destroy the enemy life support hub. You could even go to the enemy base and try and do a bombing run on part of their base, thus destroy parts of the base that will cost them, causing them to possibly go down a level. these days i susspect multiplayer is dead, maybe 1 or 2 games running, but nothing big.

I think a good game would be something like an Elite/Freelancer/X3 type game that also used something like the NWN or Morrowind construction sets for when you landed on planets/space stations. That way you could (eventually) have a huge universe supplied by the modding community.

X3 is very good! Only reason I uninstalled it was I had a 36GB raptor at the time and getting games to fit was bad enough!

It's great as a trader too - you can literally loose hours once you get your trading fleet assembled.. then you can start on some serious fun with some suped up warships to change the pace..

Very worth while game IMHO but needs a lot of time to get started. Learn a lot about how the trading components fit and the best areas for trading.

I mentioned X3 & Eve earlier but if the latest games aren't a prerquesite then there are some real gems out there as mentioned by others. Independence War 2 and Tachyon: The Fringe being great examples. Got both of them kicking around here somewhere. Might hunt the boxes down and re-install them someday. More recently, Darkstar One had incredible potential as a space based rpg but the samey missions and star systems really let it down though, which was a pity. More variety and depth and it could have been an absolute classic. Still might be worth a play though if you can find it cheap.
