I'm afraif there is still nothing to rival Freespace 2 - I know its old but if you can get hold of it and download all the updates then there really isn't anything close.

Independence War 2, Freelancer and X3 are all worth a mention though.

Freespace 2 is brilliant. Excellent storyline, decent graphics (when modded), a control system which is intuitive yet not dumbed down and some excellent set pieces.

I've also just completed Darkstar One, which while not without it's flaws is still a decent game.

cool , i tryed eve online, way to "user-unfriendly", im not nocking it i just dont want to spend 3 months getting used to a game like that.
i want something that i can use a joystick with, that just has space flight actiona and multi player is a good plus, i have X2 and X3 but now im looking for others, ive done x series lol.

i was also thinking about just getting IL2 but i would like a space shooter insted

keep it coming

Isn't EVE a sort of point and click combat system? I think he's after a more dogfighting experience hence mentioning Battlefront 2 in his post.

I'd give X2/3 a go if I were you.

X-Wing Alliance

That's about right. Sadly all the best dedicated space shooters were made years ago.

You could also add X-Wing to that list (possibly the toughest game I've ever played). But you gotta love Freespace 2... The sound of the capital ships opening up with their beam lasers = :D

Point and click! Nevah!

Point, target lock, F1-F8. :p

With, mixed in random clicking in space to help you in the long run.

Also agreed, have both these Star Wars games and they're awesome. TF is still worth a play even though its 13 years old now, it was what I was about to suggest when I saw this reply :) X-Wing Alliance is also pretty good, although the stories not as good, its a lot more compatible with XP though, and its been modded around with added craft, and also complete graphics overhauls if you look around :)

***.

Still the single best Space Sim there is. Fantastic game, superb storyline.

Looks to me like Freespace 2 is very linear in as much as you go through the missions like X-Wing for example.
Freelancer looks more open, so you can go off and do pretty much what you want when you want.

Is that a fair description?

Is X3 basically a better version of Freelancer?
