*SPACE COMBAT GAME*

That does cover it partly in regards to FS2 and Freelancer...but...also..they're completely different games. FS2 you play with a joystick, dog-fighting and using your afterburners to desperately avoid enemy fighters/beam weapons from capital ships. Freelancer's combat is much worse - mouse control, almost point and click... BUT you've got the openness and ability to trade/go on random missions (which was very poorly implemented imo...x3 is far superior).

I'd say they're very different games. I love FS2 for it's fast-paced space combat...and if I had time at the mo, I'd be playing X3 for it's open-endedness and such.

Freelancer is pretty poor imo..I'd avoid it. (though that might've changed with fan mods)

Going to try the Freelancer demo tonight.

The only thing stopping me from buying X3 is knowing how it will run on XP on a 20" iMac with 2GHz dual core and the 256MB version of ATI Radeon X1600 gfx...?

X3 is an excellent game - if you have the time to get into it. i only scratched the surface and relised it was a bit too complicated for what i wanted. i was used to games like freespace 2

cool

i used to play colony wars: red sun on the PS1, it was the best action space shooter that money could get you, and in my opinion it still is, apart from X3 with the capital ships and joy sticks.

its a shame that they arnt making another game it was great, it was made by pygonasis and i think there "disanded" now.

the 360 needs some space combat games, it would fair pritty well in that direction i think.

then there was that other star trek game that was small fighters in ship to ship combat, that was also on the ps1, i think it was subtitled invasion, was also really good.

i think the direction that games are going in now takes them away from the basic "jump in" that games were suposed to be, pc way more than console.

eve online for example, its just space WoW, weather you like to admit it or not, even if it is longer and set in space with ships , the basic pricables are the same. and like WoW, you have to pay a lot for it.

return of the space fighter sim ***!!!!!!!!

Jumpgate used to be the only twitch based MMO with a half decent population but it died over 18 months ago for all intents and purposes. For my money there was no finer space combat game sim. The beauty of the dogfighting was unsurpassed.
