Space Shuttle Atlantis set to launch

Yea I wasn't sure if it was the OMS or the RCS. I would have thought the RCS would be used to separate from the tank, OMS are for actually adjusting the trajectory?

hmm I don't think it was the MECO, it lasted for quite a while and am pretty sure it was after MECO, might of been tho.

MECO happens before the tank seperation (it wouldn't be a good thing if fuel was still flowing when they seperated :p)

The answer is definitely RCS btw, source :)

Ninja edit, nobody saw me, right :)

Only me :p Who altered my original answer in favour of yours, when I was correct :D

Damn, it's late!

heres the external tank cam replay now, have a look around MECO and see what you think......

Replays. They can't do any more live footage until they have the payload bay doors open and the Ku-band antenna deployed. That'll happen later tonight, shortly followed by them all going to bed. :)

did u guys see what I was talking about? I don't think it was MECO as it seemed to be around most of the orbiter. weird.

-edit- yea the flame top of the frame, which expanded into a strange flare around the orbiter.

Guess it must have been an OMS burn. But I have never seen it move down the Orbiter like that before though!

Ah, ISS coverage now. That doesn't need the Shuttle's Ku-band antenna, though in this case it's still recorded. :)

Did you know they use the likes of NetMeeting and Skype up there.

They certainly use NetMeeting (I've heard them mention it before). As for Skype, well, they make VoIP calls, and as everyone else uses Skype. ;)

The 'phat pipe' is their Ku-band system. It's capable of carrying a live HDTV stream, so the above should be childs play. Only problem is that the buck stops with you when your warez downloads are discovered. :D

Haven't you seen the TV averts? (some brand of beer wasn't it)? :D

They're adding new solar panels this time. Full schedule on the link below if there's anything in particular you want to see. Best bits are the docking and the spacewalks.

Not much more tonight save the press conference where all the managers applaud how well they did. :)

ahhh, you mean they're just drinking fosters "laid back lager" while they sit there?

I meant the people who've been up there for 6months. must be pretty strange, no real day/night cycle I'd imagine, sleeping on a fan so you don't suffocate in your own breath... I'd love to be an astronaut.

The ISS does operate at earth-like air pressure so it's not like they have to wear anything special.

Biggest problem is bone and muscle loss due to not having to fight mavity, so they have to excercise like crazy. One of them even ran a marathon onboard recently.
