Spain harassing Gibraltar (again)

Screw the EU, I think it's about time that NATO stepped in and told Spain to stop. These are acts of agression and as such are a big no no between member countires. It's not as if Gibralter has not been "convenient" for NATO in past "emergencies"

Errrr Spain is a member of NATO

Why would NATO get involved, if Spain took over Gibraltar it would still be able to be used by NATO, so what would it matter, your point makes no sense

Your missing the point (insert rolleyes here). Spain and the UK are both members of NATO, amongst many other things. Spain is quite clearly acting as an aggressor here.

All Spain has done is tighten border controls, which it is entitled to do, it's the UKs stupid fault for being so narrow minded it didn't sign up to Shengen, as if we were a member of Shengen it wouldn't be a problem as there would be free movement across that border!

A military treaty organisation such as NATO is not going to get involved unless someone is stupid enough to use military force! It's more likely the EU will sort this out if it even gets that far, as for the idiot who suggested NATO I think you need to realise what NATO actually is!

So should the Southern Netherlands be given back to Spain as well then? And perhaps Spain should give itself back to Moors?

i asked a very simple question :) if something got stolen from you, do you think you have the right to claim it back? even 20 or 300 years later.

gibraltar was taken away from kingdom of catalonia (Spanish) 300 years ago.

yes Spanish have left it for too long lol

I'm fully aware of what NATO is and the "tightening" of border controls as you put it is an act of cold war, the controls are unnecessary and are designed to do nothing more than disrupt economic and social flow between the two countries at the greater inconvenience of Gibralter. It's is cold hard bullying and I know what I always do to bullys.

NATO relies on the member countries being on good terms and a Government stamping it's feet, over a Sovreignty issue that has long been settled and recognised internationally, to do nothing more than distract it's people from how inept and broke they are is not conducive to that end.

The precedent exists with NATO putting it's fist down with arguments between Greece and Turkey. Spain need to realise they can not get away with this.

I'd be slightly more sympathetic if they didn't have enclaves of their own on the other side of the straights (Melilla and Ceuta).

We could always impose strict border controls on Bristol as retaliation.

We seem to get half of Spains youth over here every spring.

the world has seen over 50 world empires and countless smaller factions that gained and then lost power. this means that in a place like the Mediterranean a piece of land has been under numerous different rulers over time

no-one has a "right" to a piece of land, it's just topsoil of the planet Earth - if you are in possession of it, then it's probably yours.
if another person can successfully mount a legal or forceful takeover, then it's theirs! :D

So, seeing as Spain's government is waging a de-facto economic war on a part of the UK, how about we use our sway in Brussels to make things difficult for Spain, seeing as they're dependent on EU bailout money?

TBH Spain tried pretty hard not to have the EU bail them out and it wasn't until December/Jan 13 that the bailout happened. Most economists will tell you that the recession in Spain is over anyway, which to be honest is true, there are more and more businesses opening and getting back on track and although unemployment is still high, the figures of people out of work are contracting, so it looks like Mariano Rajoy has done a pretty great job so far, over the past 2 years.

As for Gibraltar... their government did turn around and say the reason for the man made reef was to stop the Spanish fishermen fishing their waters... which to be fair you can see the Spanish fisherman's arguments and it does go against the EU fishing laws. The boarder delays were well out of order though, but come on... it is Spain we are talking about, they like to make themselves seen and heard every now and again.

I'm in British and want Gibraltar to stay British by the way :)

Kingdom of Catalonia? Catalonia was in the Kingdom of Aragon at the time Gibraltar was taken and I'm pretty sure Gibraltar was in the Kingdom of Castile at that time?? Anyway, just nit picking. :p

Indeed, Spain will be wanting Belgium, Sardinia and Milan back next :D

I say we just hand most of western Europe and the middle east back to Italy on behalf of Rome.

You wrong on the reefs being against eu law. The irony of it all is that Spain has laid 25 similar reefs along 460km2 of their coastline, with eu funding. Do not get confused about what this is all about. Fishing is still possible but without rakes or nets. The issue is who controls the waters and that is all. It really is that simple. We even conducted a fishing survey before we laid the reef to check that we were not going mess up the enviroment.
