Spare a moment for some input on my upgrade?

Hi all,

I've lost touch with hardware over the past few years, and find myself in need of upgrading my home server.

Basically it's primarily a storage solution for all our photos & videos we've shot over the years, but is also hooked up to the TV for netflix and the occasional Steam game.

Am also running 4x drives in a software raid 5 configuration, so am OK with choosing something that's possibly a little overkill in terms of spec.

After some looking around, I've settled on the following:
- Asus 2170M-Plus Motherboard
- i5-6600
- Corsair Hydro H100i
- Crucial Ballistix 16gb kit

Is the above a decent combination?

Can switch up the ram if needed, it's more about the quantity at the moment - so at least 16gb.

Not necessarily intending to overclock the system, but where I live the summers get hot - so having extra solid cooling is a must.

Anyway, any feedback welcome.

Cheers!

The current rig is based around a slighly aged Asus P5K Deluxe with a E8200 C2D Wolfdale in there, and 8gb of Ram.

Booting off a 500gb WD drive, and running 4x4tb drives in a raid5 configuration, and GFX is a Nvidia GT 720.

Pretty much all the other bits will remain as-is for now.

What case is this going into ?

You would need a 'K' cpu if you want to overclock.

The H100i is massive overkill for the cpu. Depending on what case you have a good budget air cooler would be fine.

The case itself is a Lian Li PC-343B, and it's currently running on air, but our flat gets to 35+ in the summer, so the cooling being described as overkill sounds pretty good :)

Am unlikely to do any overclocking though, but thanks for the headsup!

I would go with something like a Noctua D15S. Still overkill, but it will be very quiet and it will perform just as good as the H100i.

I take it this is your case ?

What are the implications of making that cpu, mobo switch?

Not a lot, just you get the newest architecture and higher clock speeds, as well as a few kabylake bonuses.

Here are the skylake and kabylake equivalent options:

You're not going to be overclocking though unless you go for the 7600K, so you don't need a Z motherboard, you could use the B250 equivalent:

Total: £86.69
