What attitudes do you have to beggars?

Passing beggars was always hard for me when I was little, never knowing whether to stare blankly at them or just to blank them. Feel sorry for them of wonder whether they are using the money for alcohol.
Give them a quid and wonder how far it got them...

There was a thread like this a few days ago.
Apparently some dress up like beggars and are acctually making 30K pounds or more a year.
Im going to gather all the beggers up and start and enterprise

i always give people in the street anything.. whether its 10p or 50p or a combination of both (i never have pounds coins in my pocket.. im poor) especially if they are playing music

edit: for the people that are doing for a living, them im a mug for chucking money at them, but most will be genuinely poor and what is 50p really (dont answer that either :p)

Never mind beggars. It's random chavs asking for money that gets to me most.
"Spare some change mate?"

See, that changes everything. If someone is hanging out if front of the pub pestering everyone they see, I walk calmly past. But if they're trying to entertain us, it's worth whatever change I might have in my pocket.

I saw a beggar outside the Jobcenter, and wait for this ...

He was covering his ROCKPORT SHOES with a blanket could tell they were rockport...!!!

What a load of bull, beggers don't make anywhere near 30k. That'd be £100 a day. That's insane, I've only ever seen them with a few pennies.

Anyway I don't give beggers money and hate the ones who come up and hassle for spare change for a "taxi home".

Nope, they get nothing off me, not a bean. Living in central Middlesbrough for 4 years really took away any sympathy I had.

Them might get a slice of pizza if I'm on the lash though.

EDIT: I do buy 'The Big Issue' from time to time though.

Never given 'random' beggars money. often purchase 'The Big Issue' from authorised vendors.
A long time ago, I was harrased by a beggar while on my way to get some breakfast at a local greasy spoon. As I hold my value of never giving random begars money, I offered the chap to join me in some breakfast at the establishment I was on my way to..
The tirade of I dont want food ****, just give me the ******* money, I dont want your ******* charity. HOW IRONIC!!!!

From then on, I am very selective of who my 'spare' change goes to.

I once met a bloke in Edinburgh who asked me for money for the bus through to Glasgow - anyway - I gave him the money and asked him, "look mate, I've given you the money, you can come clean now - what's yr story, do you _actually_ need to get a bus to Glasgow tonight??"

...he told me the truth. He lives in Livingston in a semi-detached house with his wife, travels to Edinburgh or Glasgow each day and says he needs change to get a bus to the opposite city. He said he's making a fortune.

Get this - he even showed me two little pin badges, one Celtic, one Rangers - apparently when he sees a group of blokes in a pub, he'll don the appropriate badge, and tell the same story...

I don't usually give them anything, if i give one some money i feel bad as i can't give everyone money, so i just blank them mostly tbh.

Think of it this way.
Get a good location with lots of people, If 1000 people walked past in a day and only one 10th of them gave 1 pound that will still be 100 pounds they get.
It would soon add up if you have a good place to beg

I seem to actually know quite a few in Manchester on 1st name terms haha (comes from standing outside Spar whilst my mate buys fags on a Friday night between bars). Tend to see the same ones week in week out. Never give them change but have bought a few hot drinks and the odd bit of food over time.

That's because the second they get given anything it goes into their pocket. I know you said you don't give to beggars, but if a person saw one with only a few pennies in his cup rather than £10 in assorted coins, I think you'll agree a person would be more inclined to give him some.

Would you be more or less likely to give them change if their hat was full of pound coins??

Also, who in their right mind would leave a load of money in plain view of the public, especially when you sitting down. Some chav could have the money and be gone before youd even got to your feet!

I don't give money as I don't know what it'll really go on. If someone's sitting near a burger van and hungry, if I have money, I'll buy them a burger or something.

Begger's who harass me at the cash machine will get a polite "**** off!"

I do sometimes feel quite sorry for the "Big Issue" people.

There's one around here who's really good on the guitar and I'll give him some change, as I figure he's earned it but the scroungers don't get anything. And I really hate the crack heads who try to spin some lame story to get their fix.
