any ideas ?

vista?

secondary drive going to sleep after x minutes to save power :)

takes a few seconds to come online again

XP home
not sure about a sleep mode tho sometimes i get into it ok and go through some folders ok then it will just hang

Sounds like power saving to me too.

Try turning the specific option(s) off for hard disk power saving in control panel and see if it makes a difference.

This is what happened to me just before my drive gave up!

I would copy everything off it onto another just to be sure, I am running solid state drives now I have had enough of moving parts causing me problems.

Does it copy files slowly? as this is also what mine did, the PC is had it in was very slow and I assumed this was the problem.

When I rebuilt my PC and re installed XP the disk was clicking and all my data I dumped on there for the re install is now gone.

just checked C/Panel and hard drive power is already set to "Never" turn off drives
useing AVg atm tryed turning off still the same
