Hi all

Just had/having a problem with my pc, I switched it on earlier, fired up BF2 and started playing, all of a sudden i got sparklies all over the screen, then the game crashed back to desktop.

I figured it was probably too hot as it is a very warm and humid day here.

I've let it cool right down, unplugged everything, opened it up and given it a good dusting out. It was a bit dusty but nothing out of the ordinary really.

Anyway, after all this, fired it up and had the following distortion on the post screen and Windows loading screen:

When it got past this and into windows there was no display and the monitors switched off as though there was no signal.

I restarted and tried booting up into safe mode. This time it got into windows and the display on both screens (in clone mode) was fine.

Any thoughts? Is my graphics card dead? Could it just be a drivers problem? ( i did try installing the latest drivers but it didn't seem to help...)

Any help very much appreciated!

System spec as asked for

P4 2.8ghz
Geforce 7800GS OC AGP
2GB Ram

I realise it's an old system but it's been fine up until today.

How come display is fine when booting into safe mode?

The Drivers are not being used so the card isnt running at max.

But even the Boot screen and load up screen are screwed.

Darn, been looking to upgrade in late september in time for bf3, looks like i'll have to do so earlier now!

Was hoping to keep this as a second pc to play bf2 with my girlfriend...

Are there any agp graphics cards i could look for that would be an upgrade from the 7800gs oc? Maybe second hand?

I had simillar issue with my computer yesterday turned out to be awful interfearance with my studio speakers.... I got a cm 690 ii advanced with side panel window, the side panel fan mount has cut out gaps (take it it acts like a filter or something)

My computer sits on my desk directly beside one of the speakers and system booted up fine first time when they were already turned on and then after a reboot I got those green spraklies and a message saying Amd drivers crashed and it kept happening UNTIL I turned my speaker off and everything was good.

The only explination for this is cos the speaker was sitting directly beside the fan mount which like I said has those cutouts which was leaving ther card open to any abuse

Im not saying this is your problem but it goes to show that it could be anything really and you'll have to go through things individually with trial and error

If it is dead and you dont need to upgrade now.

Use the MM here to get a cheapo GPU then wait for BF3 :)

I wont even be playing BF3 or MW2 now on pc.

Might have to see if there are any cheap agp cards on mm. Any suggestions of decent models that might perform as well/better than the one that's just died?

Will still upgrade soon, pc has been running pretty slow of late...

Cheers, will have a look for those.

Also, just read up on my card to remind myself of spec, being a BFG card, turns out it has a life time warranty...might give them a call on monday and see if they'll do anything for me...I don't have much hope but got to be worth a call.

As others said, VRAM is fubar'd. Should be reflowable though.

OP I could try reflowing it for you if you wish, I have a heatgun and have reflowed quite a few cards in my time.
