My old Sony HiFi CD player is giving up the ghost after 12 years, so I have ordered a new all in one unit to replace it (Denon CEOL N9). I'm planning to just hook it up to the old Sony speakers to start with, but wondering if I should plump for a new pair of speakers.

Prepared to pay £150 or thereabouts. Any ideas?

Yes the XX20s are bigger, louder and sturdier than the XX10s.

But style aside (though that may be important to you) I believe there is very little difference between the 2020s and the 3020s, besides being £70 more expensive.

So to answer your final question, the upgrade from 2010 to 2020 is worth it, but the upgrade from 2010 to 3010 or 2020 to 3020, in my opinion, isn't.

Couldn't find a direct comparison of the 2020 and 2020i, but two different whathifi review exist

Just look at the review score on amazon (not always the most discerning listeners I know, but it's rare to see anything rated that highly), and that's priced at £149 too. If I were you I'd bite the bullet and drive to RS if you can't find comparable price somewhere nearer. Just make sure you call and check they have stock first. They are good with reserving items too

The I is the newer model with the upgraded tweeter, so it's worth the extra. I found the same thing before I got my 2020i's then noticed Olathe £89 are old model.

Get the i's :)

Yes, I was looking at the 220's

Are they better than the Q acoustics? Maybe a bit more than I want to spend.

Just had a bill for £400 to respray my car that was keyed over Christmas :(

The 2020i's are a fantastic speaker and can be bi-amped as well. They sound a lot bigger than they are. I have the 2020i upfront and 2010i at the rear in my system and have no complaints.

You can get the 2020i in Wallnut for £119 from PeterTyson.

The 2020 are still a great speaker and tbh a bargain for £89 but the 2020i is a nice improvement and a better all round sound.

Threads such as this are useful for drawing up shortlists, but in the end you really need to go hear these speakers with source gear and signals that get reasonably close to what you're using at home. That way you'll know if the difference between the higher priced speakers is worth the extra to you.

Yeh, I know that would be ideal. But you're never going to reproduce the exact environment / setup in a shop.

It's not life changing money and my ears aren't the most picky. I think I'd be more than happy with the 2020i's.

Just wondering whether it is worth a trip to richer sounds to save £20 :p

Would probably cost me about that in petrol, but I guess I could make a day of it out shopping with the missus :)

No, of course you're not going to reproduce the exact environment / setup in a shop. That's not possible so it's not a sensible goal. What you're aiming for is a fair representation of the abilities of the speakers for the purposes of making a comparison. The source equipment should be of comparable level to your own so that the source sinal neither offers a performance advantage nor does the speakers a disservice. It's a simple A/B comparison.

There's an interesting contradiction in your post. In one line you say it's not life changing money. The next line though you're weighing up the pros and cons of saving £20. If.its not "life changing money" then why worry about £20?

The worrying about £20 is whether to buy the 2020i from RS @ £99 or Peter Tyson @£119, so it's more a price on his time (no consideration for petrol), than how much he's willing to spend on more speaker

Second hand B&W 685's are coming in near this budget, and are an absolutely excellent speaker. Better than anything else suggested in this thread, as far as I've seen. I have 2 pairs of these, and 2 pairs of the smaller 686's. They are also fantastic.
