Speakers for Gaming

Hi Guys,

Just looking for some advice on a set of speakers.

They will be used predominantly for gaming, and even then rarely as I tend to play most games with friends using TS3. It's very rare I listen to music or watch movies on my PC.

But for those rarer times when I fancy gaming with no headset, I would like a reasonable set of speakers.

Absolute maximum budget is £200, and I'm not sure if I really want to go that far given the relatively little amount of use they will get.

I seem to have narrowed it down to the following 3 (in descending price order):

Corsair SP2500 2.1 (~£180)
Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 (~£120)
Corsair SP2200 2.1 (~£50)

To be honest, I'm favouring the SP220s, purely on cost. But if the Aegos, or even the SP2500 are a notable step up in quality, then I'm happy to pay the two or even three times more!

My soundcard is a Asus Xonar Essence STX.

Just wondered if anyone had any views/opinions on this, or even any other recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

Jim

If it were my choice, of the three, I'd get the Aego's. I've seen a few unfavourable comments about both Corsair speakers.

The SP2200's have come down in price, which makes them more attractive, but the Aego's will be noticeably better. Just depends whether you would rather save some cash, and get the lesser speakers, or spend £120 and get the better ones.

SP2500's are expensive, and according to quite a few opinions, are no better than the Aego's. Some of those who have compared, have rated the Aego's as better.

There will be fans of the SP2500's though. They have a large sub, and for some, the more bass there is = better speakers.

Thanks Marsman!

I'm more than happy to spend the money on the Aego's. They do seem to have a lot of very positive reviews.

Cheers!

Jim

Speakers only for gaming and which are going to get relatively little use? Logitech all the way. Audiophiles will hate you, but hey, what do THEY know. The X-230s are 2.1 and the X-530s are 5.1, and the latter will set you back around £70, leaving you £130 left over to spend on games, booze or women ;)

If you want to see more options with reviews and scores you could always take a look here ** link contains competitor information and links *** , but I think the X-530s are your best bet...

Thanks Snafu,

I am a bit of an audiophile. I have spent quite a significant amount building my HiFi. It's just in another room to my PC. So on the odd occasions I do listen to music on the PC, I do want it to sound reasonable.

Will very likely go with Mars' recommendation of the AE's (after 2 new tyres for the car, as I have just noticed the fronts are down on the limits, so that's another £500 to shell out!)

Don't go for the SP2500, awful sound quality, especially for the price. I returned them to ** Weren't you told above not to mention competitiors? ** many months ago.

That's not too smart is it, linking a competitor. Better remove it ASAP.

Erm sorry, link removed. I didn't think it would be a big deal since everybody and their mother knows Amazon and a lot of people are used to checking out products on their website even if they end up purchasing them at another place. My apologies in any case.
