My kitchen is 4m x 6.5m and has a breakfast bar with a LCD TV and a Mac Mini setup

I was hoping that the TV would have been able to play music for the kitchen but its pants

So im loooking for some speakers to go on top of the kitchen units, small enough to be out of sight, but able to give good enough quality to fill the room

These speakers are to be run from the back of the Mac Mini with a switch box to allow for the AV input to the LCD TV (TV dont have AV out)

Any speaker suggestions please, cheaper the better

Thanks in advance

Cheaper the better?

You can get some small speakers that might do the job in conjunction with a cheap amp for less than £50 if you go s/h for the amp.

For a respectable sound you would be looking at probably £100-£150?

You could try some Hardon/Kardon's? I got mine from a local PC fair. While they are no match for a good stereo amp and speakers the sound quality is quite good and they can turned up loud with no distorion. I think I paid £25 for them and they came in a plain brown box and probably fell off the back of a lorry but for the price and quality you can't grumble.

A couple of the "middle of the road" manufacturers produce some 1/2 decent ceiling speakers now.

I think JBL do a pair for about £50ish which are supposed to be reasonably good.

If not then a small pair of bookshelf missions or similar.

How about using a micro "hifi" system? That way you get radio and CD as well. I'm using a JVC EX-A1 (which has a DVD player built-in) in my kitchen, with my ipod and TV connected. All the equipment is fitted into an open wall unit, with the speakers on top of the units, and it sounds very good.
The JVC is over your budget, but you could go secondhand, or buy something like a Hitachi system.

For a Kitchen a Micro system is not a bad idea.

Most Kitchens have quite poor acoustics so decent stuff doesnt usually sound anywhere near it's best.
