So I have managed to acquire an old Harmon Kardon avr 5550 amp (the thing is huge and weighs a ton!).

I am currently using an old set of logitech speakers, and of course want to take an upgrade into the 5.1 world.

I am not fussed about an amp at this stage, as I live in shared accommodation and I annoy my neighbours enough with loud volume.

Realisticly I want to spend around £150-200. Willing to buy 4 speakers just now and add in the centre and sub at a later point.

I have also heard good things about the Cambridge Audo S20s? In the price range too.

I so want some B&Ws, tempted to get some and use my logitechs for rears for the time being.

Edit -

Will be used for, Movies, gaming, music and TV. Basically an all round system. The room is very small too so nothing over powered is needed.

Oops, yeah I did forget your budget slightly! I would think with the popularity there should be a load knocking about on the bay, or you can move to Denmark where you buy speakers individually rather than in pairs...

you really should be getting the 9.1s over the 9.0s the difference is significant and the cost not that much extra.

no point getting a mega cheap 5.1 setup - it will sound naff, you need to invest a bit of money maybe over time to get the better set up.

remember your centre really needs to be the same make as your fronts - something worth bearing in mind.
 
I've heard of them before, they look a bit small?

My room is tiny, I do have space on my desk but it's not great. The rears will most likely be bodged somehow onto the rear wall or on stands.

The fronts, I'm sure I can shuffle my desk about and the centre may need to go behind my tv if I want it dead centre to the front left and right.

Unless I can get some fantastic second hand deals they are out of my price range unless I go for a stereo setup.
 
With regards to getting 4 speakers now and centre / sub later, my preference would always be 3.0 (2 fronts and a centre) over rears and no centre ...centre makes the biggest difference IMO.
 
The HK amp was highly regarded when it was new, so it's worth finding some decent stuff to match it with. Definitely look at second hand speakers. I'd be tempted to do it in stages rather than buy a cheap set now then spend money again on a more expensive setup and have to chuck the previous. Even if this means just buying the fronts now. Saying that, if your room is quite small then you might just pick up a full set for your money. Have a look on AVForums classifieds and give us some links to things that catch your eye.
