I want to start communicating with my team to avoid having to use the radio or type, but the strange thing is I can't hear anyone else in the game even though I think I've changed all settings accordingly.

What's the best way to get set up using a mic to speak to my team mates? An idiot's guide would be appreciated!

Thing I don't get with these things is - how do they make sure it's only people on your team that can hear you?

Because there in your teamspeak server? unless you give access the public. But are you talking about speaking in game? If so please do not do that, it is the most irritating crap when you have people blabbering on at full voice shouting down the mic whilst your trying to play and you have to constantly have to mute people.

Yes, but surely there must be a legitimate and safe way to be able to communicate with your squad members and help facilitate some teamwork?

Do most people use headsets with built in mics or desktop mics?

I guess most people use headsets with microphones, i personally cant see the point of buying seperate headphone and microphone. I would recommend Ventrilo
