Hey there,

I'm looking to build a tower with a budget of roughly £500 and its going to be used for primarily internet browsing, word processing, spreadsheets and for managing music and photos. The current PC i've got has a AMD 1.6ghz single core processor and 512mb of DDR1 so rather out of date and its very much dying :D

I'm in no particular need for any high-end graphics card or sound card however my Dad has specified he wouldn't mind having the possibility to play Doom 3 or fairly old PC titles occasionally.

I'm basically looking for a powerful processor, 2gb DDR2 RAM and at least 300GB HD space for his music and photos. A processor with a good overclocking capacity would be great like an Intel C2duo or something. Sound and Graphics are not particularly high on my list of priorities.

Can anyone help me spec a PC for roughly £500 then? cheers :D

This has a 4850 graphics card which is more than you need, but you could replace it with an ATI 3850 pro and save about £60.

Reasonings:
Q6600 over a E7/8xxx - better for running multiple app's in windows then a 2* Core processor, and as you said gaming is quite low on the list of priorities, and its cheaper then ever before right now!

4gb ram over 2gb .. more is always better, and its cheap so why not, wont be using over 3gb or so in XP but you might always want to go to vista in the future.

3850 GFX .. cheap, effective for what you want, can install a blueray drive in the future.
