Tell him to get a couple of soon-to-be-glue horses and a cart for the next 6 months to see what happens with the End of The World thing. Then he should be able to get... well any car will feel fast after that.

Add 1k to the budget and you're into E36 M3 money. Personally, I'd spend some of the budget upgrading the Golf. K04 + remap (injectors?) shouldn't be too much. Some of the VAG crew on here will know prices.

may i suggest a rover 620ti £2K would be massive overkill for one - i paid £400 or so for mine, and theres little quicker for the money. 4 doors, seats 5, and i'd wager will be a piece quicker than his golf?

If your really want a 4 door, how about a nice bmw E34 5 series, in the 540i guise? Just the 286 bhp and a 4 litre V8, but who loves a CV8 at at the moment? time for a bargain.
