Hi,

A friend of mine is wishing to purchase a new computer. He currently has a laptop and so will require all components. He has £500 to spend, of course he would be happy to pay less than this but would be willing to go the whole £500 if it would yeild any additional benefits. Unfortunately he has not given me a great deal of information about he needs but has stated that he'd like a relatively "powerful, high spec" machine. I asked if this would be use for games and he said no but I think he'd still like the option. We both study Electrical and Electronic Engineering and so use some modelling packages from time to time; The computer must be able to handle these (Though having said that many of the computers I run this kind of stuff on are very poorly specced but do it fine but...).

My friend would prefer to purchase a pre-built machine however I'm quite comfortable with building a computer so would like to propose the idea (And possible spec) to him and see if he can be swayed.

He currently has a very old CRT available for use if he does not fit a new monitor into his £500... I'd like to give him options that both include and exclude the monitor and so he can see the potential loss/gain of purchasing a new monitor.

Currently he is looking at a machine of the following spec for £499.99:

* 3GB DDR2-SDRAM
* 1000 GB Hard Disk
o 7200rpm, interface Serial ATA
* Blu-Ray Reader/DVD-ReWriter
o Max: 4x DVD+R9 (DL), 4x DVD-R9 (DL), 16x DVD+R, 16x DVD-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM
* NVIDIA® GeForce® 9300GS
o PCI-Express Graphics card with 256MB, DVI-I, 1 x D-Sub VGA and 1 x TV Out
* Integrated Memory Card Reader
o reads from and writes to all standard memory cards**
* DVB-T/Analogue TV tuner card***
* Network controller Gigabit 10/100/1000 Mbit/s
* IEEE 1394 FireWire
* 8 Channel Audio
* PS/2 keyboard and mouse
* Remote control

Can he get more than this by doing a custom build?

Any spec lists for the best he could get for £500, both including and excluding a monitor would be most useful. Would also like to here if you believe these options are better than the one above and if you'd suggest the pre built or custom built route.

Thanks a lot! :)

I have no idea whether that DVB tuner is any good or whether he needs an OS.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies! An OS is definitely needed. Not sure if he *wants* a TV tuner, just that the PC he was going to buy has one anyway.

The PC he was looking at has a CPU (It's a complete PC)... I assumed (A silly mistake!) that copying the description from the website it is on (Didn't want to link as it'd be a competitor) would have all info... Obviously not. There was a bit of info above the main tech specs; Therefore in addition to what I listed earlier it has:

Akoya® PC System P6888
Genuine Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium, Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6600,3GB RAM, 1000GB HDD and Blu-Ray player

How does this rate to the builds that have been suggested in this thread? Is he best to stick to the one I've linked to (A pre-built machine) or should I try and persuade him to go custom built?

Cheers.

It may well be, but do they do a good PC for 500 notes? :p

Need to know by tomorrow whether I should give him the green light or if we can do much better building a machine... I always think it's a tough call when an OS is needed...

What do you think? That model or a custom build?

I think that asking this question in this forum is unlikely to provide you with a constructive answer. Its a bit like asking Jeremy Clarkson his opinion on a push bike.

Well, put differently, how much could the same PC be built for? Including OS, etc.

If the price comes anywhere near to the pre-built price I may as well leave my friend to purchase the computer he's seen, and keep building the occasionally box soley for myself :p

Surely even you guys can be objective, right? ;) :p

How the hell can someone give an answer when they haven't seen or heard of it! My best guess would be that is made from the cheapest no-name components available. The software build will not be up to DELL standards. Support (when rather than if its needed) will be err......... difficult. If he needs a pre-built PC please go elsewhere.
