Spec a server for a server newbie!

A lot of it is just learning the layout and format of things, keep notes so that when you re-do it, you know what you need to tweak. While SI1’s guides are usually OK, you’ll quickly outgrow them and he's seemingly less interested in updating things or correcting what wasn't great advice to begin with eg folder structure etc. as it doesn't support atomic moves/hard-linking.

Bit of a thread bump, had my Unraid server set up for a few months now and running smoothly!

Really don't make the most of it but it's been very handy to quickly spin up VMs to VNC to mess around with Linux distros :)

One thing I'm trying to get my head around at the moment, is it possible to store an image of my gaming PC (Win11) on my server, so that instead of going through the process of reinstalling windows which I periodically do, I could just go back to this image of a fresh install with the basics already installed?

I know it must be possible somehow but I'm trying to work out the best way :)

Is there an Docker app or shall I look into a windows server/AD domain and boot things up from there?

Overthinking it.

Just use your NAS to store a backup image made with macrium reflect or the like.

As long as your macrium reflect recovery usb has the correct network drivers (99% it will) then you boot that and can restore the image from the nas share

As per usual!

It seems like Macrium Reflect isn't free anyone, does anyone know of an open source alternative?

MF went paid about 2? years ago when v9 launched, v8 should still work though. Free options i'd suggest looking at are AOMEI Backupper, EaseUS Todo Backup and RescueZilla depending on your needs, I would start with AOMEI, RescueZilla didn't do incremental last I looked.
