Hey wanted to know if any of u could spec a shuttle pc....or equivalent(box shaped and small). A friend of mine has asked me to help him spec one but I dont really know anything bout these sort of pcs. Well, his budget is small(400 less pounds), he doesnt need a monster machine, just one that he can go on internet with, burn cds, store his music and use things like word, etc.
Anyways looking forward to ure specs!
cheers!

INFECTION I'm afraid you've put a socket 754 CPU with a socket 939 Shuttle so it won't work.

I'd probably suggest something like this, it has onboard graphics, a good CPU and plenty of hard drive space. If the budget is really important getting an 80gb hard drive would put it under budget again.

cheers for the replies guys.......Sounds ***, I gather the first option is a no go for the mistake, but the 2 choice looks ok, even though above budget ts not too bad. What about if we threww in a monitor? what would be the ideal choice? And one more thing....with these specs, I wouldnt need anything else? I mean that thats all no other parts required? WOuld this system be able to handle internet access.....music playing and normal tasks? what bout gaming? its not needed for gaming but just wanted to know.....is it an ok pc for its price or what?

If you want a monitor then I'd suggest a tft simply because if you are going with a Shuttle or any small PC then you don't want to waste the space saving by getting a large CRT. A 17" monitor can be had for around £130, if you wanted a stopgap then you can pick up cheap 17" CRTs for somewhere around £40ish although I think the cheapest on OcUK is about £70.

No other parts would be required on mine or INFECTION's specifications although you'd need to change the CPU on INFECTION's :) You could play some older games on either, maybe even up to about Half Life 2 level but probably at low detail levels and maybe 800x600.

What about internet and normal tasks capabilities? would this pc cope well in these situations?

If anything it is overspecified for internet or office usage, you can quite comfortably get away with even a PIII for that sort of thing providing you have a suitable quantity of Ram. I use a PIII 850mhz with 128mb Ram when I go home and that copes fine once the application is loaded.

I wouldn't be tempted to go any lower though on a new PC, the prices just don't make downgrading worth it.
