Hi guys,

so... i'm a student at uni now and of course im getting my grants/loans through and thought i mays well replace my aging (yet still serving me quite well) opty 165 (2.8ghz) 1950 pro AGP setup

I was going to use a e4600 since Ive come into a few of them but now im thinking i mays well buy a q6600 or e8400 (heard they oc to 4~ghz)

I will be using the pc for mainly gaming but also 3d studio max and maya over the uni course, could you spec me something around 400-600 (no case/PSU/HDD as i have an antec 900 and corsair 520 modular psu i can use)

notes on general spec i want:

4gb of decent (overclockable) ram,
an extremely oc'able CPU/motherboard combo, as im completely out of loop with the core 2 boards etc,
possibly a solid state hdd if they are worth it, but im not sure about that atm, have a 750 Samsung F1 and another 300 was thinking of getting another F1 750

You might aswell upgrade HDD while your at it as Storage is dirt cheap right now.

What does intrigue me is how a uni student can afford to shell up to £600 out when living on grants :P I wish I could make a student loan stretch to that lol

well.. lol, its true, i shouldnt really be doing it but i think if i dont spend too much on parts i can get a part time job (hopefully) and also have a cheque coming in from my last job in the next few days

thanks for the advice guys, think il give one of the e4600's a try on overclocking before i buy a new CPU as well.. wil probably go for the asus p45 board and some dominator or ocz ram (2x2gb), then maybe a 300gb veloci since my current 750 F1 and 300gb seagate are full to the brim, chuck a 4850 or 70 in there and im good to go i guess.

on the subject of 4850s or 70s, is it worth getting the 1gb model? i mean, im only going to be gaming on a 1440x900 19" widescreen

well if i were in your shoes I'd not get quite so fancy RAM and put that extra cash toward the 4870.
If you've filled those disks it's time to turn your old rig into a server :P no way you should have that much stuff on a desktop that's gotta slow things down.

hmm, possibly i dont know, never really thought mass storage slowed things down.

atm i have several partitions

750 F1 samsung:
100GB - os/apps
150GB - games installations
500GB - storage

300 seagate: extra storage

although since im out of space on storage drives i do tend to fill the others with more crap too... i was going to get a 300gb v-raptor and use that for OS/apps/games then just use the other 1.050TB for storage
