Spec an RTS for an RTS newbie :)

sup com is too hard for someone who is new to it.

my vote would be on dawn of war/c&c for the very first one, easy as pie than CoH, empire war,sup com etc

if u can still find on budget labels ..

Total Annihilation ....

Homeworld 1 + 2

Dungeon Keeper 2

Dawn of War an pks WA,DC,SS

Superme Commader FA

Dune2000

Settlers

Awesome, got loads of suggestions here to keep me going for years probably lol, thanks for the help :)
So far I'm going to give C&C generals a try (reviews seem to say its the best one)
also World in Conflict looks good so I'm going to see if I can find these in a bargain bucket at my local purple coloured retailer that probably cannot be mentioned :P
CoH is already ordered and on its way though :)
I'm definitely converted to RTS now lol just need to work on my 'micro' :D

just remember if you do get any of the games suggested to u ;)

to track down updates/patches for em ,

casue with these games they not only fix problems in game they tend to add stuff aswell eg: new units , unit upgrades , maps , weapons etc ....

so it can be well worth hunting down patches ;)

good luck an have fun ..

an remember u get better @ micro the mo u play the game ...

ohh yeah don`t just jump in an play the camp/skirmish modes straight away see if any of the games start u off on a tutorial mode first ...

Total War and Supreme Commander are hardly for RTS noobs... :p

I'd recommend keeping at CoH campaign, it's such a good game. Also think about the C&C series for more arcadey action.

Total War is absolutely fine for "RTS noobs". Rome was the first RTS game I ever owned, and I got 100+ hrs from it. You can pick and choose which battles you fight in real-time, and the campaign map being turn based means you can have lengthy breathers between large battles.

Exactly. Besides, the manuals are decent, and some functions can be handed over to the AI.

For a beginner definitely DOW2. The first DOW games were traditional RTSs, but the second one made away with a lot of the deeper management aspects of the game to create a more actiony, flowing experience. The singleplayer was great, and I haven't enjoyed a singleplayer RTS campaign since Dune 2! The multiplayer is hard as nails (was very amused last night that I gained a rank without actually having won an online match ever:p) but still probably more approachable than other online RTSs simply because the economic aspects of it are less developed.

In my books, Rome Total War is probably the best RTS I have ever played.

The first Medieval:Total War is better :)

In fact I personally think that Rome is the worst in the series!

Anyway, not sure if the Civ games count as being true RTS games, but they are great for newbies:)

starcraft and brood war addon, can't really get any better than that for a new player, starcraft is good honest, bread and butter style RTS plus it has a pretty good campaign and it runs on anything :)

Being a noob myself to strategy games I'd highly recommend Warcraft 3. It still looks great. The tutorials are excellent, easing you into the game.
