Spec an Xmas PC for my son..

But with that spec rig plus an extra gig of ram he'll be able to play on high settings with no stuttering and will be more future proof for the games that he'll inevitably want to play in the future.

Why not get a system of 2nd hand bits? a 3700 would be fine for what he wants it for, i doubt he will spend nights on end benching it.

i would say 1 gig is fine, you would find that he would notice it and would not enjoy it as much as you would lol, if you get 2 gig keep it for yourself ;)

1gig for now and upgrade later :D

Sorry, but who said its his 1st pc, al i can see its his new pc i didnt see 1st pc anywhere...

Me too , just every evening (from 8 pm when i had to be back home) i was always gaming till 11 pm... (well not always , mix of tv and pc).

That i noticed it was probably because my dad builds pc's from when i was 4...

Just tbh (i correct myself), 2 gigs insnt really needed, bf2 needs 1280 mb ram exactly ( 900ish for game itself, about 200 for background apps) , the 2x1 gig thing is probably because ppl want dual channel...

well, as its his 1st computer he WONT know the difference between 1 gig, and 2 gigs, stop bitchin' about nothing and get on with your life

Why not, ** underestimating young ppl, 9yrs old are smarter as you may think...

Also dont tell me what to do, open forums, as long as i dont break the rules i can post whatever i want, just giving my opinion 1 gig isn't enough for a gaming pc...

Where does it say its his 1st pc??

Simple option: Buy him the 1GB spec for christmas then include the extra gig of RAM as a b'day present ;)

He will notice long loading times and stuttering, it may be his 1st computer but i doubt it will be the 1st he has seen or used.
If all you can do is offer negative opinions and **** people off then why not just browse the GD forum, they are right up your street.

is it me or are you just trying to turn this argument around on me? i spec'd a computer, and you consistently slagged me off about it only having 1GB the entire thread, while you didn't even bother to post a spec, so either post a spec or stop slagging me off for specking a reasonable PC for the price bracket.

edit: also, looking back on the OP, he says 1GB of RAM, i specked a PC with EXACTLY what the op wanted, dont patronize me fro not specking 2GB's, into a spec which couldn't afford it, or which it was not wanted/needed

9 year old playing on battlefield? tut tut :p

as long as he didnt get ideas like me, trying to make a C4 bomb out of some hair spray and some drain pipe and a potato to make like a potato cannon LOL :D

Didn't notice that this had some extra posts added after my last... :D

The 2GB is still an option for now, haven't ruled it out. Thanks for the other specs, much appreciated.

It'll be HIS first PC but he's been playing on and off my setups since he was 5 (maybe even a little bit younger on some other games like Tweenies, Action Man etc. :) ) Saying that, he's had an XBox on a 14" TV for two years so is accepting of the lower resolution etc.

And just in case anyone is wondering, he does go out, he plays football for the local team every Sunday for 2 hours and trains for an hour mid week :)

Thanks again.

Dont be a drama queen, modern apps use more rather than less resources so get some anti spyware/virus and firewall running and its very easy to use up 1 gig once you load a game. If i alt tab from COH for example im using over 1.3 gig. With many people destined to move to vista over the next 24 months i just think its worth getting 2 gig now rather than later.
Its one of those things that you only appreciate when you go back to 1 gig.

For the same reason people buy a 8800gtx to play at 1280x1024, people do cos they can.

i take offense at that type of gutter mouth, just because you have to do your business in the alley doesn't mean you need to be jealous of those that use public toilets

edit: oh, and by the way, if your soo keen on building this guys computer, why don't you actually spec him a decent one, with in the budget, instead of moaning because i didn't spec 2GB, within a tight budget? god some people need to read the original post instead of having a go at anyone who posts different to whats in their PC

Just a quick check.

Is the Sonata II a decent case/PSU combination? The only issue I have is that you need to open the door to power it on?

Any other decent looking case/PSU combinations for around £80 or less?

Cheers..!

Best ask Yewen on the Cases thread, he will be able to point you in the right direction.

You missed the point of that dig.

I didnt rubbish your spec, the spec if fine, i just think that 2 gig would be worth it if his budget allowed, my opinion not yours.

I built a PC yesterday with a Sonata II. I'm pretty impressed with it, from both build quality (only a couple of cuts on my hands), and how quiet it is.

The door hinges right back so that it lies (almost) flush with the side of the case, so you can leave it open and it doesn't get in the way that much. It's not that much of a faff to open it, to be honest.
