Just to the left of my PC
My PC is a bit on the old side and probably won't last much longer as it is. I have some spare money, so it's time for a new toy.

I'm planning on using my current drives as they're fine and my current graphics card (7950 at 1.0/1.4, which is still OK for 1080) at least until I see what's what with 10xx and 4xx cards. I'll ask MS nicely if I can transfer my current Windows licence to the new motherboard, which is arguably a replacement, so no need for a new OS licence at this point. I could keep the case, but it's a cheap old box and a bit of a pain to work in so I'm thinking of getting a cheap new box instead.

Sensible budget limit is ~£500 for the remaining bits, but I don't feel any need to spend to budget. If I can get something good enough for less than my current ideas, I will.

I was going to say that I don't intend overclocking, which is true but probably won't remain true The last CPU I had that I didn't overclock was a 386.

I'd prefer to have OcUK build it because I no longer enjoy doing so. I dislike it enough to pay someone else to do it.

I'm rather out of date on things since my default position on hardware has changed from "want new things!" to "what I've got will do well enough", so this is an initial idea and not fixed.

I'm also considering a config on the OcUK Kinetic H1, which would include the cost of paying OcUK to build it.

115 views and no replies seems unusual. What did I do wrong? Too wordy?

A more precise question - is there anywhere I can conveniently get measurements to check that a given stick of memory will either fit under a given cooler or will be far enough away from it on a given motherboard to not be under it?

Another - same question, but for a given cooler fitting inside a given case. I don't fancy cutting a hole out to get that "old supercharged American car" look :)

If you want to overclock, you want the z170 chipset motherboard.

The different motherboards make up the bulk of the price difference, so really that is your choice.

As for cooler clearance, you will need to look at the motherboard layout, read the manufacturers descriptions and do a little math. A quick look at the case description would indicate that the fan you have chose would fit.
