Hi,

So I'm building a pc for a friend and I only have access to limited selection of parts (I'm in Croatian, pc parts are super expensive and there isn't a huge amount of choice).

With that said; my friend won't ever overclock (boo) and will pretty much just want a hassle free gaming pc (dota2 and similar games). Silence is important, especially when watching videos and listening to music.

What I've sourced thus far:

I5 4670
Antec p100 case.
4x2gb G.skill ripjaws x series 1600 MHz not sure of timings.
120 gb Kingston hyper-x SSD
2 TB western digital HDD
650w XFC core edition psu (52 amps on 12v).

So all that is left is the motherboard and graphics card, again my choices are limited but below is what I can get

The choices for motherboards are:

Asus h87-pro
Asus z87-K
Gigabyte z87 Hd3
Asrock z87 extreme 3

As for the graphics card I think the R9 270x is the best bet (only 280 I've seen in Croatia was £350). However I'm unsure which will be the best brand with silence in mind.

The options are;

sapphire duel-x boost OC 2GB
sapphire vapor-x 2GB
gigabyte OC 2GB
Asus 2GB

duel-x OC 4GB

Am I right in thinking that the 4GB 270x's are not worth it? I mean do they even have enough grunt to make use of the 4gb? The graphics card won't probably be swapped out for a few years so yer I'm unsure.

Thoughts and advices would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

You've sourced some good parts there, The case was a good buy, a very well built silent case..

Anyway, for the motherboard i'd go for the gigabyte but the specs of them are so similar i don't think it matter.. a lot of people swear by the quality of the Asus board but im the same for Gigabyte.

As you've not got a K series CPU though, a H75 or B75 motherboard would be cheaper and just as good.

Yeah a 4GB 270X is pointless, for the reason you mentioned.

Again, my preference on that is the Gigabyte OC, appearently the Dual-X coolers aren't that great.. The Tri-X ones are though if you can get one of those. :)

Thanks for the reply Doomedspeed,

I agree the case looks amazing, actually thinking of getting one for myself when I get back to England!

I think I may be able to get a 2Gb 270x toxic, it's the same price as the 4gb duel-x. Maybe the gigabyte 270x. Does anyone know how quiet the toxic and gigabyte 270x is while watching videos/etc (important for him)?

I was leaning towards the gigabyte board as well over the Asus. I guess I'll just take any of the gigabyte/asus I can get my hands on without having to wait ages!

Criminal really the above posted parts are gonna cost him just shy of £1000 Everything is so expensive here! 290x ref was £540!!

Yer I was thinking of looking outside of the country (Infact I even asked ocuk if they would ship out to Croatia. But the fact the shop is just around the corner for simplicity's sake and that he wants the computer within a few days kinda limits me some what!

Also not sure how it would work with tax from another country?

What kind of price difference are you looking at between those boards? Seeing as you are getting a 4670 you won't be able to overclock anyhow so probably better to get a higher end H87 board instead of a medium-low end Z87 board as the H87 is generally cheaper

I'd go with the H87-PRO in my eyes, though if you wanted to spend that £20 or how much more and if you have access to one, I'd get the lower end Z87 board and a 4670k, but obviously that depends if you have access to one :)

Do you already have these parts?

Nope don't have them yet. I have reserved the parts and was planning on finalising tonight & picking up tomorrow.

What I hadn't decided on yet was the gpu/Mobo.

Decided in the end to go for the toxic 270x and the h87-pro. Picked up all the parts and put it all together this evening.

Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it!
