I started this in another thread where I asked for thoughts on a rig that will be purely used for gaming & maybe light photoshop work(but this isn't likely at least in the short/medium term). Ideally I'd like to be using this rig for a good few years, my current rig is 7 years old with an i7 860, which I put some more RAM & a 970 in a 18 months ago.

It was suggested that I get a better Mobo & would 2400Mhz memory would be better, fair enough so I've updated the spec to the below.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £2,016.35
(includes shipping: £0.00)

But I've been pondering a X99 system as well, what is everyone's opinion on a 5820 vs a 6700k with the following?

Thanks.

I'm going to disagree - faster RAM can come in handy for some games, especially with Skylake. And the difference won't be just 1 fps in these cases but instead around 10-20 fps. You're spending a lot so might as well. 3000 or 3200MHz.

Sure you can be unlucky with instability but most systems will be fine, and any problems all you have to do is lower frequency, and maybe tweak 4 or 5 timings, or just leave the timings on auto. Or send the RAM back for replacement due to it not running at stated frequency/XMP.

Up to you, just think it's playing it too safe when you have easy-enough alternatives if you are unlucky.

6700K V 5820K: I would go with 6700K for your needs.

The i7 6700K is faster out of the box for gaming, but the extra cpu cores on the i7 5820K might be more useful for DX12 games.

You can get the EVGA G2 for an extra £10 and double your warranty to 10 years. Not a huge issue as the XFX XTR is still a good power supply. If you plan on keeping the setup for more than 5 years then maybe go with the G2.

I think EVGA are fine with you removing the cooler on the gpu. Not sure on other brands. Maybe check with ocuk before you order.

I thought the XFX were re-branded Super Flower PSU's & a bit better than the EVGA ones?

XFX are re-branded seasonic units. It's the EVGA G2s which are re-branded Superflowers.

^^This. The XFX XTR is based off the Seasonic G series and made by Seasonic. The 850W model is based off the X Series AFAIK.

EVGA G2 is based off the SuperFlower Leadex and made by SuperFlower.

The 750W and above EVGA G2 has a 10 year warranty, and the XFX XTR has 5.

You will be fine with a 750W for the Skylake build and 850W if you go for X99 as the cpu is a bit more power hungry. If you don't plan to SLI then 550W/650W is fine.

Turns out the evolv isn't a good case for water cooling so I've gone with a corsair air 540.
