Hi

My son is building a new PC for his grandparents, one point to note is that they need a case that is less than 35cm high. They have monitor, printer etc PC is next to router so no need for wireless yet.

Use will be Web, Office, Skype, Storing/Burning Photos, Storing Music and occasional gaming.......so light use. I plan to use onboard graphics for now. My approach has been to over spec as I expect this will be kept for 3 years at least.

My questions are:-
1) Will the DVD and card reader look OK in the case, or should I try and find the Lian Li card reader?
2) Is the Power Supply OK........I need less than 300w but wanted modular as its a small case....

Any other thoughts/suggestions?

All seems fine to me, although I'm no style guru.

I would be a little hesitant at spending so much on a case for such a cheap build, but cases do pretty much boil down to personal preference anyway. Cheaper small-form-factor cases are available, however.

Your system mostly seems vastly over spec for everything (an Intel Atom system could happily burn CDs, run Skype and play music for 5+ years), except for gaming. What kind of games are we talking about here, Bubble Shooter or Civ 5?

As above, also you say youre going to use onboard "for now" does that mean you may add a dedicated in future? If so youll want a better PSU than OcUKs own brand, whilst it is considerably more for a branded modular PSU, if you plan to add a dedicated card its necessary really

I would opt for a branded PSU. Perhaps a Corsair CX430W which is a £1 cheaper and will be more than enough to power their system and is potentially more reliable. Also, you could get the Intel Atom board or the AMD equivalent Zacate as mentioned but for £30-40 extra (specs above) you already have a faster system which will last longer.

Thankyou.....

Case I agree, way overkill but my step-mum likes it and it will sit on her desk not mine....;)

I did find a cheaper case Antec NSK 3480.....with a PSU included, I have the Antec Sonata III and it has been fine.......so will offer that and see what she says.......but for looks it falls way short.

What other suggestions for cases do you have?

PSU I will change to the Corsair or do you reckon this is better...

Games played will be what my boys play, Settlers 7 would be the newest.

On GPU no plans for a dedicated card but I may pass down one of mine so would like the option.

I will do an AMD build for her but I reckon the cost saving will be small and the i3 seems such a great chip.....
