Spec check question please...

Do you mean just posting the parts you want to use or actually the parts with prices? The first would be ok but the second probably isn't as you could use a price check website and find out where you were purchasing from, I'm not a moderator so could be wrong on this though.

Oh right ok.

First, here's my current rig for comedy purposes:

AMD K6-2 500 massively underclocked to get the damn thing to work.
128 mb of ram (I splashed out on an upgrade from 64)
16mb voodoo 3
Powered by a 9v battery
Runs solitaire a blistering 3fps
About 8 years old and on it's very, very, very last legs.

Looking to upgrade to something that'll be able to cope with Vista and is suitable for web browsing and basic day to day stuff (spreadsheets etc). Also want a moderately sizeable hd as I want to put a fair whack of music on it. Oh and as cheap as possible. Don't need keyboard monitor, mouse.

Had a look around and though about the below:

Sony CD-RW/DVD Combo 52x32x52x16 Internal OEM
MSI AM2 nForce 410 MATX Audio Lan DDR2
Crucial 512MB 240Pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-4200 Non-ECC
(Rival company)value Midi Tower 400W Black
Maxtor DiamondMax10 160GB S300
AMD Sempron 2800 Socket AM2 1.6GHz 128Kb Cache 800FSB

Total is about £190 including delivery.

Thought the onboard gfx would be ok for vista and using am2 rather than going 754 or 939 makes it cheaper and gives good upgradeability (is that a word?). Could buy an x2 when I have more money and the prices drop a bit more. Also buy a gfx card for future gaming.

Does this lot look ok to you?

Cheers

If you are wanting somthing to cope with Vista you may be struggling with that speck.

I have seen a Beta version run on a AMD 3200 64 bit and a 9200pro graphics card with 1gig of pc3200 ram and it killed the pc.
The CPU was running at 40% and took ages to go into controle panel and just to do the basic tasks.

Vista also has a lot of improved graphivs such as 3d icons and glass effect this takes a lot more out of the graphics card.

I would think your speck is fine for a run of the mill XP system but would struggle on Vista.

Like the Idea of getting a good upgradable motherboard so you could add to it at a better time (more money).

Hope this helps

just to confirm, naming competitors is not allowed and talking about their prices is pushing it so please avoid it if you can. Thanks :)
