Hi all,
Hope everyone is well.

new work computer time so I have come up with following spec. I have £500 (ex vat) budget which I intend to fully utilise.

I hope to order the pc later today, so if anyone has any feedback that would be awesome.

The pc will be used for graphics editing, lots of web and database work and it will be a local development server as well.

Rick

My comment would be to go for 4Mb (2 x 2Gb) ram and a 5xxx series AMD graphics card.
cheers, andy.

Freezer 7 cooler comes with thermal paste attached.

Drop the graphics card? THe board has on board graphics. Use the extra cash to put towards a better CPU cooler and then overclock the beast a bit :)

I hadn't spotted the onboard graphics, interesting, I might drop the gfx card and look for a smaller case.

Not really interested in overclocking it. I have a gaming pc for that at home :)

Have you considered upgrading to an i5? With a slightly cheaper mobo and without any aftermarket coolers/paste, you'll get similar results for the same price without the potential problems of overclocking, which could be a turnoff for a work PC.

e: if you're not overclocking anyway, the i5 will offer significantly better performance. You really shouldn't get a black edition or aftermarket cooling if you're not overclocking.

Alternatively, you can get an X4 630/640 (similar performance to a non-OC'd 965 for a lot less dosh) and spend the remaining money on a nice case or something.

The HD4290 is quite capable, I have the same board, it does use system ram though.

If you do drop the graphics card, an option may be to put two terabyte drives in Raid level 1 for data security (mirrored drives).

Thanks hybrid, thats worth looking at certainly.

The system will be running ubuntu by the way, if that changes anyone's suggestions

No problem, happy to help :)

I'd switch the graphics card (if you get one) for a cheap nVidia equivalent, as nVidia tends to get better drivers for Ubuntu.
