it's time to update my aging barton xp to something a little (hopefully a lot) faster, i've alreay got-

case - Akasa Eclipse 62
case fans - Scythe 1600s x2
case fan controller - Akasa blue knobs thing
monitor - NEC 20WGX2
keyboard - Cherry black
mouse - Logitech mx510

i'll need-
psu
motherboard (need an ethernet/lan port for my router)
ram
harddrive (prefer western digital)
floppy? (had one on current build but only ever used it to load memtest i think)
dvd writer/reader
cpu+cooler+thermal compound (as5 still the best?) (tuniq tower would look smart inside but is there anything better?)
graphics card
sound card (for games, movies and mp3. i'm not a musician)
os (xp64? or vista64?)
forgotten anything?

it will be used for online games (gtr2, fps, c&c3, coh) and photo/3d editing about 50/50. help will be greatly appreachiated as i've not been keeping up as much as i should on what's best to get.

Less fast CPU, but will be as good if you clock it to 3GHz. Better graphics. Up to you really. :)

Slightly overbudget but I managed to squeeze in a quad core proc, AAKSes in RAID0, and a 640 MiB GTS.

a gts with lots of ram (512meg+) for highres textures in gtr2 would be good.
i was hoping i could get 4gig in there?

hehe i know, it's difficult i keep adding to the basket then changing my mind, would it be better to get 2x2gig or get better rated 4x1gig for about the same cost? i'm assuming this ddr2 ram is like my current ddr with lower numbers (apart from the fsb) mean faster?

only a ram change, better than the first spec?

i thought more mhz is better but just noticed the other is c3, so the 5300C3 is rated slower but better quality than the 6400C4?

Not so much better quality, they use exactly the same chips. But the 6400 Rated RAM offers nothing over the 5300 Rated and will clock very well. Just saving you a bit of cash thats all.

thankyou everyone for all the help so far, last question hopefully is there any difference between the Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R and the Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R apart from the p35c supports ddr3?
