Well, i will be overclocking, and I will be getting an asus a8n ultra and a 3800+ x2. I will try and get the x2 to 2.6 at least. But i have £150 to spend (that is the bare maximum i can go) and i will only get one if its like £140-£150 if its alllot better than a cheaper one
Cheers

Well, the Gskill ZX has really nice stock timings, and is meant to hit about 240MHz with slacker ones, so if you ran with a divider, you could have your ram runing about 200 and 2600 on the core (x2 3800+ has 10x multi) and have the really nice 5-3-2@2 timings, or looser and push that fsb further...

yea.. but is it worth the extra? because £150 is really really stretching the limit. Would any of the corsairs be better. Also, whats better. say worse timings and better fsb or lower fsb and better timings

How does that compare with say the Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT, I'm a noob to this memory stuff and looking at getting a 2 gig kit meself....

You could look at the OCZ pc3200 EL 2gig kit on sale here under "This weeks offer". I got some of this meself a coupla days ago, threw it in, set 2-3-2-5-1t in the bios, stock volts, running a divider so at 208mhz, primed for four hours. No probs at all. All for £146 inc, total bargain if you ask me. I also read that these will go to about 250mhz 1:1 with slack timings, but I'd wait to here from other ppl here or do a search.

I agree, absolutely superb RAM and equally at a superb price from OcUK. :)

Better than say the Gskill ZX for my 3800x2 (That I'm coming in to buy in the morning :D
They use the same chips so it is the same RAM. OCZ is one of the best memory manufacturers so that is always going to be a good buy. The Corsair is not so good as IIRC it is only rated for 2-3-3-6 which is fairly slack compared to 2-3-2-5.

To the OP: Get some CAS2 RAM for best performance. Timings are far more important on an A64 than FSB so sling it on a divider and run 2-3-2-5 @ ~210-215MHz using the 166mhz divider (it should run this with ease). CAS3 @ low FSB on value RAM isn't great and if you want best performance, then I suggest spending that little extra now and not wishing you had bought the better option later.

To The B.A: If you intend to keep that Socket A, then I advise you get some high FSB RAM (if you intend to overclock with it DDR500, if not, then CAS2 is what you should get, normal DDR400) as Socket A's have a large impact on performance when using a divider (not so for A64's which are completely unaffected).

Does any RAM today do 235-ish with tight timing?

HTT @ 280+ meaning that a divider of 166 would still require the RAM to handle just under 240Mhz.

If they exist but cost close to £200, then I guess I'll stick with 133 divider with value-ish RAM using tight-ish timing.

Thanks smids, I'm off to OcUK tomorrow for a new board, chip (3800 x2) and ram so methinks I will get some of that there OCZ pc3200 EL 2gig stuff to go in me new board :D

There is one thing to consider here that is relevant to cost. My question is, "Do you see the benefits of having fast (read expensive) memory in anything other than benchies" I replaced my 2gig generic memory with this ocz PURELY because I wanted 2gig in our second pc, but I wanted some quality memory in the main one and the ocz was/is up for a VERY good price so I got it.
performance wise, in gaming, browsing, etc, I see no tangible increase in performance whatsoever. In benching, I probably would, but I'm not into willy waving (ooer missus), and gaining an extra few points means nothing to me, but stability and speed at stock do.
I think a few ppl here expect for their pc's to fly when they instal expensively fast memory and I reckon they might be a bit disappointed when their scores aren't as high as they had hoped for.
What I'm trying to say is, I really don't believe expensive memory (£200 plus for 2gig) is worth it meself.
This is only my opinion btw, based on what I've found in the past, but good quality memory for a reasonable price is a must.

I just picked up some Corsair Value - 2gb kit. It came with UCCC ic's and is running at 275 1:1 right now with 2.62v!!
Same timings as GSKILL HZ.
Still testing, but for just under £107, I can't complain :D
