For my birthday I'm after a new camera.

features I'd like-

Great image quality, especially in low light (graininess and colours)

wide lense (not really sure what I mean here, I don't know enough about camera to know the technical term, but at "zero zoom" i'd like to be able to fit a lot of real estate in the image)

10x zoom +

Bonus Points for rechargable battery.

That's about it really, I'm not fussed about different modes and what not. I have been considering this, what are your thoughts?

Hi Almoststew

I have been ding a fair bit of research lately as I have bought a new camera. From what I have read that camera you linked to may not be very good in low light as it has a small sensor.

I bough a Fuji XF1 as it has decent low light capabalities. It is no good for you unfortunately as it doesnt have a 10x zoom. It does have a lens which starts at 25mm which gives that "zero zoom" feel.

Bridge cameras are terrible in low light because of the small sensors they use in order to enable such a compact lens.

You need an interchangeable lens camera in order to get a combination of a large zoom lens and a large sensor. However you will not find that combo for close to £250.

You will be looking at £300 for a body like an Olympus EPL-5 or Nikon D3200 with 3x zoom lens, and then the same again if you want to add a 10x zoom lens.

I'm sorry but 10x zoom is a pointless thing to mention. 10x zoom could mean 10mm to 100mm or 100mm to 1000mm!

I'd generally recommend avoiding bridge cameras though.

I went for the Canon 1100D kit in the end on the basis that it is a more popular brand = more guides and tutorials, and more lenses. The lense is covered in ***** finger prints so I'm after a lenses cleaning kit- can any recommend one? Are the give quid sets on eBay to be avoided?

You can just use the same type of cloth as you do for glasses.

Well if he says he wants it wide at the wide end, and given that there are only so many 10x zoom lenses, I think we can confine ourselves to the conventional choice of 18-200mm.

Maybe 18-135mm if needing something cheaper though.
