Ok building an upgrade for a friend who has £471.41p to spend
so he already has:

  • 2 HDD's
  • PSU
  • Optical Drive
  • Monitor
  • Case

Thinking this will do the trick and last :p

Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £179.99

Sapphire HD 7770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £109.99

Gigabyte Z77M-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £86.99

OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (AGT3-25SAT3-60G) £49.99

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £41.99

Sub Total : £390.79
Total : £480.35

minus the £9.50 for postage.

£470.85p :p

But what PSU model does he have? Are the HDDs and optical SATA? What case is it and can it fit ATX and/or mATX? Will he also need Windows?

this spec me is a little retarded, how does spending exaclty what he has in the bank make a better pc, surely the best bang for buck with the money he has would be the better option?

I would agree with this, apart from the use of the word 'retarded', as some people find that word offensive, just a heads up.

I said he has £471.41 to spend not that it has to be reached but i was trying to get it exact myself :p

Anyways:
he has 2HDD's 250gb and 500 gb both sata
has a mATX case.
and a 550watt PSU (a decent make but i cant remember what but i got him it)
No windows needed.

is the 6850 better then 7770 ? - I assume not.
I think my original spec is ok, perhaps change the ram to save some more pennies?

Thanks

You assume wrongly (actually, it's moderately debatable):
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/536?vs=539

This is the whole "generation" vs "family" and "model" thing and down to picking apart the numbers and knowing what they mean.

Taking the 6850:
6 - generation
8 - family
50 - model

Assuming the cards you are comparing aren't too many generations apart (i.e 1 at most 2) you can generally expect the family and model to matter more in relation to the power of the card :)

Eg: GTX480~GTX570

I see and understand exacly what you mean, i was just using a rule of thumb - "you get what you pay for"

ok so you would recommend the 6850? possibly the 6870 but al look at the price of these now.

thanks
