I should be getting my new system this week, wednesday hopefully;

Asus Maximus Formula X38
Q9450 2.66Ghz

will keep:

500GB Seagate
2x 1TB Western Digital
8800GTX OC
24" Dell
Vista Ultimate 64

require:

4GB DDR2
cooler for cpu

So, in order for me to get the most out of the Q9450, what ram would you recommend and why, I am looking to buy this on tue/wed. Thanks :)

You'll be wanting the fastest your board can support. The Q9450 has a x8 multiplier I think, so with 800MHz RAM, you'd only get a max clock speed of 3.2GHz. With 1066MHz RAM, you'd get over 4GHz.

As for brands, just go for whichever is cheapest.

How do these compare:

1. OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 Reaper HPC (2x2GB)

2. OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 Vista Upgrade (2x2GB)

3. OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 ReaperX HPC Performance (2x2GB)

4. OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 Vista Performance Gold (2x2GB)

5. OCZ 4GB PC2-8000 Platinum XTC (2x2GB) EPP (Nvidia Approved)

All cost ~£40, which would you go for?

Which one is most likely to overclock the best? Brandwise I have used OCZ a lot and never had a problem so I am happy to stick to them especially since the price difference between the different brands is negligible.

ReaperX is the best there, although will be fairly similiar some sets more than likely use the same chips just different spreaders/spd settings.

They are £45 new, I might go pick up a set tomorrow, thanks.

If anyone else has other recommendations for around this price, I'd be interested to hear, thanks.

All of the 6400's are 800Mhz tho :(
I got the OCZ2P10664GK on special offer a few months back and they have been on special at least once (maybe twice) more since then.

Hi e36Adz, since they are all around the £40 mark then I would seriously look at getting the OCZ 4GB PC2-8000 Platinum XTC (2x2GB) EPP (Nvidia Approved) since you are guaranteed your memory being able to run at 1000MHz which will mean you will then be able to overclock the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 right the way up to 4GHz without your memory holding you back. This is of course providing the actual chip you have will be able to reach that sort of speed, your motherboard being able to cope with such a high FSB and before temperatures come into play.

Now, I'm sure the PC2-6400 rated memory you have mentioned will be able to clock past it's rated speed but this isn't guaranteed and neither will you know how much further they will be able to overclock. If they all cost around the same amount of money though, it would be far more sensible to buy the higher rated memory. :)

Hi e36Adz, this here would seem to be the memory that you have listed and I honestly can't see anything wrong with them and at £42.49 I would seriously consider getting them, cracking price. :)
