Currently have a Alienware aw3821dw, it was nice to start with. The the local dimming and dark scenes are just absolutely horrible. I've got an OLED tv and honestly, I can't use LCD/IPS anymore, it's just not even close and the restrictive contrast ratio is an utter pain.

Primary use is gaming, very little work done on it. Ideally 42", max 48". I want to go back to 16:9, no more UW however if the screen is 48" I'd like it to be able to display in UW ratios if I choose.

Must haves:
Minimum 120hz
Displayport (latest)
HDR10
VESA mounting
OLED (anti glare is a nice to have but not essential)

Price doesn't really matter, I'd say more than 2.5k is going to raise my eyebrows and have to be damn good for anything more than that

I don't think any monitors have Displayport 2.1 yet do they? In fact until the 7900XT/XYX there are no GPUs with DisplayPort 2.1

As badass mentions the LG 42C2 is stellar, it lacks display port, but the HDMI 2.1 inputs do 4K120 HDR just fine and will pass audio as well.

I've just come from a 38" UW (Acer XR382CQK) and thought I'd try the LG 42C2, it's amazing value for money, the 4K 120Hz with VRR support is stellar.

Badass is the guy to ask of course, but not sure if the LG 48GQ900-B is worth a look, the 48" LG OLED Screen, 138Hz and has Display port alongside HDMI and is a more matt screen for £899 at the moment.

Like you I had a Aw3821 and got the LG C2 when on offer for £649 a few weeks back. Okay no DP but I get 120hz over hdmi 2.1. To me the 4k OLED monitors at twice the price or more just wasnt worth it for the small extras they offered.

Gaming on the LG C2 is UW ratios works without issue as well. Will never go back to IPS.

no screens with DP 2.1 yet no. but if you're only looking for a 4K 120Hz screen then it's not needed anyway and would offer no benefit, so DP 1.4 is definitely fine.

Personally i think 48" is too big for a monitor, but I like the 42" screen size of the other models discussed here. Agree that the LG C2 is excellent value for money right now, and it's been around a fair bit longer than the other options discussed

Thanks guys, I did consider the LG c2 (seeing as I have a LG oled for the home cinema) however the auto dimming would end up driving me insane I think.

Although, it might do until I decide on something long term. I'm currently tempted with the soon to be released asus rog pg42uq.

You could always pick up a £10 service remote and disable ASBL (TPC) in the service menu :)

For me the sub £700 LG C2 is a stop gap until we get some large QD OLED 4k monitors with high refreshes. I suspect we are still a few years away from them though.

I have a AW3821DW and I just made a sideways move to an AW3423DWF.

What can I say? The AW34 is a real gaming monitor, the AW38 is not. Although the 38 has good levels of brightness and a high refresh rate, the local dimming and contrast are, as you say, terrible. The 34 does produce better colours too, although the 38 is very good.

The 34 is a lot smoother. It just looks better than the 38 even at lower refresh rates.

My only criticism of the 34 ( and actually its a severe criticism) is that the colour fringing on white text on a dark background is really off-putting.

A real plus for the 34 is that it's surprisingly easy to drive with a GPU. That extra 25% more pixels on the 38 makes it a lot harder to drive. Great for business applications but not for gaming.

The 38 makes a much better business display. And actually that's how I would categorise them - the 38 is a business monitor that can do games, the 34 is a gaming monitor that can do business.

I kept my 38, I use it for general daily stuff. But for gaming, the AW3423DW(F) really is king.

Asus ROG Swift PG42UQ Fits the bill.

You can turn off automatic brightness on this. I have one and it's excellent and also has anti-glare. 43" is just the perfect size as well. A bit pricey but worth it.

Thats my issue with that screen. It offers a few minor improvements only over the LG C2 and yet costs more than double. I just couldnt justify that spend esp when knowing what I really want is a 42" QD OLED 175hz screen with both DP and hdmi.

So the tv will do as a stand in for a few years.

I'm now in the same boat, I was tempted by the Asus, but for my use case, the LG C2 has 90% of the features I'd like that Asus has. With it being literally half the price here in Holland, I'm going to get the LG C2 and upgrade it later next year as the OLED market is certainly taking off and I imagine there will be some big announcements next year on the subject.
