OK guys, here is my story so you have some background.

In the past few years I've owned an EP3 Civic Type-R, MK5 Golf R32, 2005 Subaru Impreza STI and a Astra VXR Nurburgring.

I've soon realised how much money I have wasted and am forcing myself to stick to a tight budget of £7500-£8000. I'd like performance and reliability, something suitable for day to day but also with a fun factor. Not bothered about fuel consumption as I do less than average miles.

Here are my considerations so far;

Civic Type-R FN2 - heavier than the EP3 and also riddled with issues (gearbox, clutch, rust under seals)

Civic Type-R EP3 - Hard to find a nice one with low miles, showing their age?

Subaru Impreza STI - I can just about get another 2005 widetrack on budget, but trying to remind myself why I sold my last one, it FELT like a big car after owning so many hatches over the years. It does however feel the main contender at the moment.

Focus ST - never owned a Ford and its essentially just a Focus really, cant seem to stomach the thought of owning one?

Also briefly looked at Golf GTIs, Nissan 350Zs, Honda DC5s.

Any obvious contenders I am missing? I have money in my pocket and am already sick of walking to work 2 days in :p

R32 GTR - Fairly reliable if looked after (I have had one and own an R33 GTR), mental power and look awesome

EVO 7-8 - Again can be fairly reliable if looked after and not modded to much, again great power and look awesome

200 SX S14a maybe S15 - Reliable again and good fun if you like arse out action (I have an S14a as a daily driver).

You can pick up an 07 FN2 with sub 75k miles for about £6k. Get a catback, intake, eibachs and an LSD on it and itll be plenty of fun for around £7.5k if you join some forums and pick up parts on the cheap.

Need to get my LSD fitted having said that...

Failing that, get the face lift JDm DC2 with the 5x 114.3 stud arrangement + some good mods (ie discs + pads, intake, header, ecu, map and exhaust) and itll be heaps of fun that should hold its value now. :)

If you want performance then a Nissan Skyline as suggested. A standard GTR V Spec II will thrash just about everything it comes up against.

If you're desperate to scratch the Impreza itch again, go for a non widetrack model with some mods. Save yourself some cash in the process too.

I notice you missed things like S2000, Boxster, MX5 from your list so does it have to be a certain number of seats?

If you can find one for £8k sign me up, at that budget you are looking at best for a 95/96ish car.

At that budget a nice STI or Evo 7/8 should fit the bill.

You should go back to your mk5 Golf then we can have creepy matching twin cars / names / number plates. :D

After personal experience I will throw a curve ball and say Mazda 3 MPS, I love mine and would recommend it to someone looking for performance and practicality! :)

I'd consider an s2000 on that budget if fun and reliability are the main points given you have mentioned a 350z.
